California doesn't want this towering water project. Trump administration may build it anyway

The Trump administration is pushing forward with a colossal public works project in Northern California — heightening the towering Shasta Dam the equivalent of nearly two stories. The problem is that California is dead-set against the plan, and state law prohibits the 602-foot New Deal-era structure from getting any taller. {snip} The sudden momentum behind heightening the dam — a plan the federal government only a few years ago put on the shelf amid concerns it was incompatible with state environmental laws — threatens to trigger a constitutional conflict that tests the state's authority over what gets built on federal land within its borders...

I don't know about 'California doesn't want'. Some people do want. And have for a while. Going back to April 2013, a study recommended raising the height 18 feet, with 6 feet 'marginally' acceptable. So this is not some new thing. And yes, maybe some tribal land might be flooded, but, you know, the TVA flooded thousands out of their homes for the greater good, and sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

The constitutional question is - can the state stop the feds from building on federal land within a state?

Well, the state will sue and eventually the case will be heard in the 9the Circus Court, so expect the state to win—at least until or if it is appealed.

All they need is to shop for the right democrat judge.

This is a dastardly plot to insure that Californians get sufficient water, no matter what their betters in Sacramento, San Francisco and LA think.

California would rather “appropriate” Great Lakes water. And Great Lakes states won’t let that happen.

“This is a dastardly plot to insure that Californians get sufficient water, no matter what their betters in Sacramento, San Francisco and LA think.”

That’s about it.

We need this and more dams.

The only ones I feel sorry for are those living BELOW the dam and the eventual flood path should the dam fail.

IF the federal government/BLM see’s the need to protect those same people, PLUS provide badly needed water sometime in the future downstream, why the states resistance?

Sounds like something Kalifornika politicians would do.

California needs to get real; it’s dipshit policies have caused water issues not alleviated them.

The Blue Ridge Parkway displaced hundreds of families in Appalachia and we didn’t even get any water in the bargain...

Irrespective of the pros and cons of this particular project, why isn’t desalination a part of the plans for California? For the major metropolitan areas I would think it would be possible to supplement water availability significantly using desalination. I know it’s expensive, but so is the train they’re building, and so many of the other things California has wasted money on.

Maybe they can use the bullet train to transport water.

Just don’t let the California Air Guard have any Lancaster bombers.

“”””And yes, maybe some tribal land might be flooded,”””””

As long as it doesn’t affect their casino or the liquor store, who cares?

How would they get water from the Great Lakes over the continental divide?

Desalinization plants are a proven technology beneficial for all the citizens. Building a hi-speed rail would pass thru strategic parcels of land owned by politically connected politicians who would be compensated for the rail right-of-way. So of course California will push to build the hi-speed rail.

This is good problem solving except California does not need more water, it needs less libtards.

Jerry brown dismantled the state’s public works projects when he was first governor in the 1970’s. Including water, highways, nearly everything. Now the population is more than doubled and the state has worst traffic congestion in nation plus perennial water shortages.

Don’t forget that one of Obama’s earliest actions was to turn off the water to the CA farmers. Totally destroyed many of them bringing about farm auctions and land gobbled up by others. Was it deliberate?

This is not about water.

President Trump looks for opportunities.

California has been yelling DROUGHT for years yet does nothing to improve the situation. President Trump proposes one solution that would help the water problem and the first thing the Democrats do is threaten to take them to court to stop the project.

It is a win win for President Trump and a lose lose for the Democrats.

It now becomes a political issue to be used against the Democrats.

Governor Brown declared “war” against the Federal Government and President Trump is lining up his ducks to go after the state.

Nothing goes on forever, even a corrupt government will fall eventually. California is getting ripe for a fall.
