And many parents buy online now. 90% of my kids toys were bought at Target which has a decent toy selection and was right down the road.

IMO, that’s part of the “better parenting” thing that’s been going on since WWII. Each generation wants it better for their kids thinking they are doing them a favor by actually spoiling them.
It got the hippies going in the 60’s and we are currently dealing with brainless snowflakes.
I remember bringing gifts to my niece and nephew one Christmas and floored by the room full of stuff donated by the daycare facility they attended.
Anyway, yeah, there's a world of stuff out there all competing for the attention of kids and their parent's money. Stuff that never occurred to me as a kid!
