Game Over For Toys R Us: Chain Going Out Of Business
npr ^

Posted on 03/14/2018 4:58:16 PM PDT by Java4Jay

The chain — whose history traces back to a post-World War II baby furniture store — has spent many decades as the country's largest dedicated toy emporium. Today's parents are the millennial generation who grew up with the Internet and approach purchasing decisions and time they spend with children differently from baby boomers. Generally, foot traffic is falling at brick-and-mortar stores. And children are playing differently than they used to decades ago.

Don’t know how you stood four years. Our daughter has always been great about sharing pictures, letting her talk to us on the phone, cards and the like. It is just getting her to understand how important grandchildren are to grandparents. Yes, we have four more from her two sisters, but no that doesn’t make us any less lonesome for hers.

It is wonderful when people visit our local bicycle shop, talk to the owner about bikes, helmets, and accessories for an hour...and then drive home to order online to save $5.00.

I almost always research online then buy local. I even do so for our local Best Buy, which everyone seems to hate, as I would rather try to keep people employed than get ten bucks off an item.

I used to be into bikes and I always bought everything at our local bike shop. They are still around and I will be going there soon to get new tires and handlebars for my old Trek mountain bike so I can start riding again up in northern Michigan.

Which is why I always support my LBS. The only thing I’ve ordered online was a skin suit ... And that’s only because the local didn’t carry them.

My wife and I loved raising our kids and Toys R Us was a place with some fond memories.

I forget what comedian said it, (Sinbad, I think), but he said “back in my day, I had a rock and a stick and was perfectly happy!”

It is even changing our new homes. In my area (Seattle suburbs) they put cram $1.5 million dollar homes with 10’ between them, and 20’ back to back. NO yards for the kids to play. It’s crazy!

Amazon is the future. No doubt about it. I ordered some chair slip covers for our RV yesterday and they'll arrive tomorrow. Had tons of choices and if they turn out to be unsatisfactory I'll sent the back free, no questions asked. All this from the privacy of our home. No gas spent driving the 100 mile round trip to the city, fighting the traffic, and going from store to store (if I'm lucky enough to even find any).

Already this month I've ordered some Ariat boots and then a purse which I sent back and reordered.

There's also the free movies, books and music along with the free shipping. Yes, I know I'm paying for that with the prime membership charge but I'm still coming out ahead.

And yes, I know that Amazon is putting malls and people out of business. But that's just the way it is and nothing is going to stop "progress". It's always been that way like it or not.

I had a professional photo shop that I used to trade with in Kansas City before I moved. I was back there recently and saw that after 30 years he had finally folded his tent.

I used to make him order little stuff and he would say, Burke can’t you just get this faster on line? I would answer, “...and cheaper too, but if I keep doing that you won’t be around to take my abuse.” He was stunned and said, “you’re right — thanks.”

I give the young people in our extended family a check and a box of candy for Christmas. I don’t even bother with a gift card, it’s too much trouble for them to keep track of. They probably use the money to buy electronics. If the kids are real young, I make the check out to the parents and mark it, for college fund. They appreciate it. The kids get tons of junk and toys anyway.

For Christmas for the toddler in our clan, I gave him a little gift bag of kiddie cookies and crackers (after consulting with his Mom of course) and then a check to the parents which they could spend on what the kid needs. That kid gets tons of toys and doesn’t need more crap. The Mom says, no stuffed animals, they have too many now.

Agreed. The layout prices and selection just sucks. There is no reason to go there at all. Even when I popped in there during Christmas ready to buy...nothing inspired me to part with my money. A shame. I miss the days when Lionel Kiddie City gave them competition.

God did not abandon us...we abandoned God.

This is nation that came to embrace every wicked and evil subculture you can imagine: sexual promiscuity, homosexuality, bisexuality, gender confusion, drugs, abortion and so on. Mark my words, pedophile rights is the next great crusade.

I believe God tried to warn us. Back in the 70’s Anita Bryant warned us of the coming militant homosexual movement. We didnt listen. We laughed at her. Now here we are, homosexuals are contolling the agenda. AIDS broke out in the 80’s. About 98% of those afflicted were living in either the sexual promiscuity, homosexual or drug subculture (there were innocent victims like blood transfusion recipients and peoples who spouses cheated). Did God send AIDS. Not necessarily, but it was a consequence of sinful behavior and mocking Gods perfect plan for our lives.

I truly believe we are in the end times. So much of what scripture says about those days has come true today: people will be lovers of themselves (look at Hollywood and the whole “selfie” phenomenon), what is evil will be considered good and what is good will considered evil, and the big one, there will be a great falling away from the faith. Over 50% of American millennials either dont believe in or disapprove of Christianity. Look at Europe and all the empty, decaying churches.

But God will still be with those who stand with him. Remember that.
