Just curious, but: Had she given any indication whatsoever that she would have been amenable to a date? Any words to suggest that she "liked" you in "that way?" Any signals? Any, e.g., prolonged eye contact?

Cruz was 6 years oldwhen his father died. He had no male guidance growing up. It makes a huge difference for a boy growing up. Boys from fatherless homes commit violent crimes in epidemic numbers. You can bet that had Cruz had his father all his life, his mental illness may have been better mitigated.
It is very cavalier to discount the damage done by Cruz losing his father at 6 years old.
That is very mainstream. The “empowerment of women” mindset also reinforces the selfish attitudes that drive actions around self-fulfillment, such as deliberately having a baby without a father. That this is also related to why they can’t find a “good man” (in their eyes) is lost on them. It’s all about them, she wanted a baby and didn’t have the man in her life to deliver it - no matter, just go without.
That said, all one need to do is look at the lack of dads in the black community to know there’s a direct link to behavior and having a fathers influence.
Of course one might have a dad and still turn out bad but not having one increases the odds dramatically.

I am sure it is NOT “automatic” that a male growing up absent their father is “sure” to become a “mass killer” or even a criminal.
I think what is clear psychologically and socially is that growing up without a dad presents a risk factor that can jeopardize a boys maturation process.
I think the mass killers likely have some other familial, social and psychological attributes in common, besides growing up without a dad, but I’m also guessing that those factors can stem from - the causes behind - why they grew up without a dad.
Yet, yes, MILLIONS of good young men, likely the majority of young men who grew up without a dad, managed the shoals of a fatherless upbringing and matured in a good way. There are no assurances, but yes, being fatherless is a risk factor.
Sometimes fathers are “present” but absent in ways a son/their sons need them; it could even be just absent emotionally, as with a remote and “distant” dad who has neither much engagement with a son, much to ask or say to the son - merely “present”.
Fatherlessness is now multi-generational. Grandfathers and uncles often stepped into the role left empty, but now we have fatherless single women raising fatherless children that have no clue what the father role is or should be, so they can’t even begin to imagine an attempt to mitigate the problem because they don’t know what that looks like and none of the men in their lives do either.
The family structure is so fractured that it has no social capital left to draw from in raising children.
