Tucker Carlson said President Trump must be wary of alienating his core supporters through "betrayal" of his campaign platform.
He noted that Trump supporters put up with derision from the press, the left and others on a day-to-day basis, but still stick with the New York Republican.
"The ideas the president ran on are basically right," he said. "'America First' ought to be the operating principle of every administration - by definition."
He said the non-Trump alternative - the Democratic Party - is "scary" and "completely irresponsible."
But, Carlson warned that Trump's pointed remarks on gun control during a White House meeting rightfully caused concern among much of his base.
He pointed out how Trump verbally criticized Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) as possibly being afraid to act on gun control because of the NRA's political power.
Trump then said that in important cases, government should "take the guns first, then go through due process."
"Imagine if Barack Obama had said that," Carlson said, noting that it would immediately elicit calls for impeachment and secession on the right.
He reminded Trump that the due process is a constitutional right just as much as the right to keep and bear arms is.
Carlson added that his base could splinter during the midterms, and vote for the Democrat "alternative" if they choose.

Why Are People So Incredibly Stupid? ~
President Trump’s statement. “take the guns first, due process later” has gone nuclear on both sides of the aisle, but what he said, in context, is absolutely correct and already established in existing law. He was referring explicitly to the case of Nikolas Cruz, and the slew of reported evidence that was compiled long before he embarked on his killing spree.
In Texas, and I presume in all other states, “Peace Officers” are authorized by law to place into emergency involuntary (psychiatric) detention any person whose mental status they reasonably believe poses a threat to themselves or others. This is often referred to as a “psych hold” and it’s imposed for the purpose of obtaining a professional psychiatric evaluation.
Moreover, Peace Officers are also authorized to confiscate and impound anything in connection with the case, which might remain a threat or cause further harm to others if left unattended or in the possession of others who aren’t familiar with such dangers. This includes such things as firearms, meth lab chemicals, bomb-making materials, dangerous animals, etc, which are to remain in custody until a final, post-adjudication determination on their disposition is ordered.
Persons placed in emergency involuntary detention are to be evaluated by psychiatric professionals and remain in custody until due process has occurred, which could include the issuance of mental warrants and proceedings for involuntary committal, extensions of involuntary detention and protective custody hearings.
In short, everything President Trump said was exactly correct because such actions are already provided for by law. However, it was reflexively pounced upon by both sides to conjure up images of SWAT teams kicking in front doors in the middle of the night and seizing privately-owned firearms for no reason whatsoever. And, too many stupid Americans gulped down this fabricated hysteria -— hook, line and sinker.
Guess he should have worded it better if that is, in fact, what he meant.
None of us shot up a school or anything else, and I don’t particularly like being implicated, especially when those who had the authority to do something did nothing and aren’t being held accountable at all.
Don’t blame us when you touch the 3rd rail and get shocked.
I will assume this was another of Trump’s open mouth, insert foot moments. Aside from the fact that nobody is immune to this, Tucker is right to call out Trump.

One might think that arguing FOR a distinction without difference ( that being we should not worry about following due process when due process wasn’t followed) would be self-evidently foolish.

The vast majority of mass killings are perpetrated by democrats and or extreme leftists. There is a very logical reason for this. This disaffected and mentally unstable people are attracted to the party that preaches hate, envy, and class hatred. The democrat party is their home.

Sometimes we should ignore what Trump says, like when he endorses Swamp Things.
As a general rule, it is good to ignore most of what politicians say and just pay attention to what they do or don't do.
Tucker took a comment out of context and ignored the real message about the damage done when the mentally ill were turned loose and given the right to deny being committed/treated.
Trump was talking about an extreme situation, not a general principle.
Remember the context is the murderer who the police dealt with on numerous occasions.

Oh non no no. We can’t have Trumps statements considered within the overall discussion. We need to simply focus on the portion that leads to a false impression.
Same thing happened in the immigration round table. Tucker fell for it both times.
Their negligence was palpable, and the President was speaking out of frustration. The matter has been cleared up, and anyone who thinks the President was referring to arbitrarily taking someone's guns away is being disingenuous at best.
Let's be honest—President Trump simply isn't the sharpest tack in the box when it comes to Constitutional nuance. It's patently unconstitutional to deprive any American of Rights without due process, and the President was clearly referring to this kind of incident—when action should have been taken—but wasn't, which he found inexplicable. It's a fact, however, that "due process" wasn't the villain here, as such, the President simply blurted out a factually incorrect sentiment, which he has been corrected on.
This is yet another example of People taking the President literally instead of figuratively. Everyone knows what he meant, despite the misstatement. This should be the one thing that the Left, Right, and Center can all agree on.
Nikolas Cruz had a history of violence, violent threats, and mental problems, and there were countless opportunities to avoid this tragedy—within the constraints of due process. In anyone has blood on their hands here besides Cruz, it's the Democrat crooks in Coward County. They should be held responsible.
