I’m pretty sure this guy was on record more than once for threatening to shoot people, even threatening to shoot up a school (which he eventually did). In this case, he should have been arrested and his guns taken away as a condition of his release on probation or while pending trial.

The idea of taking away someone’s guns for psych reasons must be clarified by very specific qualifications. Like you say, overt threats of violence (including domestic), and serious breaks with reality.

Let me try and define the serious break with reality: not based on a diagnosis like bipolar, but based on a medical report that the person was ever delusional. I might actually ban weapons from dx’es like Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia because symptoms of losing touch with reality can show up surprisingly. But there are a lot of people with a dx of bipolar or anxiety or even sociopathy who have NEVER lost touch with reality, even if sometimes their behavior is erratic.

I would hate to see people with depression or ptsd be banned from owning firearms. I would equally hate to see them forego medical care to keep their guns. It’s just not right.

Exactly.

If you’re so out of control the cops need to be called, there might be cause to remove your guns until you are cleared by a shrink.

If cops are called multiple times in a relatively short period, it’s idiotic to allow you to keep them until you are cleared.

Lock em up, if he was a danger to society with his guns he was a danger without guns. The multiple systemic failures of law enforcement on every level in this case is so astonishing it’s a wonder anyone is even considering legislation at all.

Exactly
I read recently that in the dozens of times they went to his house that one of the times they were dispatched to his home for the express purpose of removing his guns.

Could have been after he held a gun to his mom’s head.

Why they didn’t do it is a mystery to common sense.

Nevertheless, they had a legal right to disarm him in the past what with his record of craziness.

This sheriff’s org dropped the ball over and over again concerning this psychotic killer

Yep...just like we would for anyone about to commit an act of terror.
