NEA: Parents, educators ‘overwhelmingly reject’ idea of arming school staff

Bringing guns into schools ‘does nothing to protect’ our students, educators from gun violence

Washington, DC - February 21, 2018 -

In a listening session at the White House today, Donald Trump proposed to arm teachers and school staff in an attempt to prevent mass shootings.

The following can be attributed to NEA President Lily Eskelsen García:

“Bringing more guns into our schools does nothing to protect our students and educators from gun violence. Our students need more books, art and music programs, nurses and school counselors; they do not need more guns in their classrooms. Parents and educators overwhelmingly reject the idea of arming school staff. Educators need to be focused on teaching our students. We need solutions that will keep guns out of the hands of those who want to use them to massacre innocent children and educators. Arming teachers does nothing to prevent that.

“We owe it to the students and school personnel, who’ve lost their lives at schools and on campuses across the country, to work together so that we can thoughtfully and carefully develop common sense solutions that really will save lives.”

The National Education Association represents 3 million educators who work in America’s public schools and on college campuses.

The NEA and probably California portion of it.
They have the $$$ and the power.

Well, some parents want less NEA in the schools.

But I partially agree. The biggest problem with arming teachers is that many are liberal. And it would be a more effective way to reduce gun crimes if we could just take the guns away from all liberals.

That’s interesting. An Ohio sheriff offered armed school security training for a class of 50 school personnel. He quickly got 700 applications.

How does this guy know arming teachers won’t help protect students? There’s never been one to get the chance.

The football coach who died sheltering kids had s CC permit. If he’d been allowed to carry his gun to school he would have saved a lot of lives. The shooter was close enough to the coach to kill him. The coach was close enough to kill the shooter.

I’ve discussed this with her and she has an exit door in her classroom so she is not too worried about being cornered in the school. but arming teachers has many risks too. humans make human errors and some might be awful to live with I think police sub stations would be a great deterrent for schools and neighborhoods.

These people don’t care about the children. They just want to protect their liberal ideas and the hell with the kids. If they cared, they would want to try something that might work. It’s the only thing that will work. Why do liberals insist that they put the schools only on the defensive. The only way to get rid of weirdos bringing guns into a school is offensive means.

Well, clearly, arming at least certain Broward County deputies isn’t working.

NEA is one of the most useless organizations on the planet.

...and yet teachers in areas where CCW is allowed are signing up for CCW courses in droves. Methinks the membership just might not agree with the union leadership.

The NEA’s position is flat out not true.

I posted an article a few minutes ago about an incident that occurred in my area 17 years ago. A student was shooting at administrators and fellow students at his high school. An armed policeman, who was posted at the high school, shot the suspect in the face and bottom, and prevented any fatalities from occurring.

I think many normal people would freeze in an active shooting situation. I would prefer more structural defensive measures that don’t put the teacher in more danger.

This is the NEA. The NEA has been sold out to the socialist agenda for decades.

Ok, Mom, let me respectfully suggest that she and her students may not always have an exit door.

Further, while arming teachers has many risks perhaps arming this skilled gun handler may be more than offset by the potentially life-saving benefits.

Finally, in re police substations being a great deterrent for schools see recent fiasco in FLA...a single, no-show coward cop covering a 45 acre campus.

Why would you give teachers guns when they can be human shields like the PE teacher was.
