Forgot about that joint? Vegas airport lets people dump pot

What happens in Vegas really can stay in Vegas. Tourists catching a flight out of Sin City can now dump their leftover legal marijuana in metal containers set up at the airport. The 10 green bins dubbed “amnesty boxes” prevent federal transportation agents from finding pot on passengers during security screenings. The drug is legal in Nevada but still banned by the U.S. government. The containers were installed last week following a county ban on marijuana possession and advertising at McCarran International Airport, aiming to keep it in compliance with federal law. They are bolted to the ground and designed so marijuana and prescription drugs can only be dropped in, not taken out.

Well... recreational use of cannabis is legal in 9 states (Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington) plus the District of Columbia, and decriminalized in another 13 states plus the U.S. Virgin Islands.

So does that mean if you are flying between these places you dont have to dump your pot?

And I can recall way back when there were pot sniffing dogs in airports. Not anymore - those poor pooches would be flustered these days with so much ganga around.

My question is who gets the cannabis after it’s deposited into these things?

Reads like a crazy out in the open scam to me.

Hmmm. Maybe there's one here in Reno. Free weed for the folks who empty the bin or re-sell it? Then again, I know folks who might say "Left over weed? What's that dude?" 👹🐲🌮🛫

Actually, recreational use of cannabis is still illegal in all 50 states under federal law. So no, I would not recommend trying to carry some through TSA screening in any airport regardless of where you are flying from or to.

Like sanctuary cities, I guess states can now pick and choose which federal laws to obey. Can’t wait to see what Texas will decide to ignore.

You need to bone up on the Constitution. States that legalize pot are asserting their 10th Amendment powers and should be supported, even if you don’t like the policy.

OTOH, sanctuary cities and states are in violation of powers delegated by the Constitution to the United States, ie control of immigration and borders.

Are the containers incinerators? Do they vent to the outside? Is Las Vegas security now a lot more laid back?

It's called Federalism. It's not that they are ignoring the law, it's that the federal law doesn't require them to do anything. The federal government can make its rules, the states can make theirs.
