I’m reminded of a school bus driver in Alabama. A few years ago, a lunatic got on the bus and pointed a gun in the driver’s face...demanding the driver let him pull a small child off the bus. The driver refused and was shot and killed...the guy did get the kid, and took him to an underground bunker for a few days, until an FBI team stormed the bunker and saved the kid.

The driver was just an ordinary guy, never expecting to be in such a life or death situation...and by all accounts he was unwavering...he absolutely refused to comply, even with a gun in his face. There was no way he was going to sacrifice a small child to save his own life.

I’ve wondered how I would have acted in the same situation...and I honestly don’t know.

Of course you know the outcome of someone taking a pistol to a rifle fight.

In this case , the outcome would have been Cruz suddenly focusing on staying alive and avoiding an armed professional shooting back instead of shooting and killing helpless, unarmed students

Any photos and name for the deputy?

Was this a “quota” hire?

I seem to remember that story. I don’t know how I’d react either. I know how I hope I’d react, but we can’t be certain.

Having to cover so many buildings would make it easier to just leave school grounds and go golfing for a couple hours.

So was he on campus and just went into hiding? Or was he away goofing off?

...has been suspended without pay ....

That's probably as bad as it will get for this .gov goldbrick. Any payouts will be at taxpayer expense. Maybe the governor of FL can fire him/her?

The failure of nerve is understandable without being forgivable.

Yeah, but not knowing any more details, I'm not going to cast stones at him.
He should have known his limitations before he took the job (and responsibility), but perhaps he did not. Cowardice in the line of duty happens - but I can see not knowing how one will act until placed in the line of fire. Poor training, poor vetting by those that hired him, and poor self-assessment of his own capabilities when he sought and took the job.
Also, given the size of the school, he might not have been in a position to have stopped the carnage. Obviously he should have tried - that was his job.

No need to go there, man.

I live in Broward County. If I was in the same position—armed—I'd have to go in and at least try to distract the assailant from his murder spree. What kind of armed man wouldn't try to protect children being slaughtered? His "man"card should be revoked.

In context, this officer's behavior was pure cowardice, plan and simple...

The resource officer at my daughter’s high school was a fat, useless lump. All he ever did was bust kids for smoking down by the river. If anyone had fired a shot he would have been the first to run.

I don’t fault him. He probably couldn’t have gotten on scene in time, even if he ran.

I do. According to the article,

Sheriff says "But what I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of building 12, take up a position - and he never went in."... Israel said the deputy should have "went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer."

Barney Fife was there, but was a coward.

Maybe. I doubt the kid was very proficient. You take what gun you have to a gunfight. At the very least he could have deterred/distracted until more help arrived. If he could have not stopped the mayhem he most likely could have reduced the body count.

As another post said—the guy was probably not mentally prepared to take offensive or defensive action.
