He did get on scene in time. He arrived, and the shooting continued for four to six more minutes, according to reports.
Please excuse the caps, but has ANYONE, ANYWHERE answered the question as to WHY it took SO LONG for this information to be released to the public under these circumstances???

No, unless you have suicidal intentions. Handguns are defensive weapons. You darn well better be better armed than an opponent when voluntarily entering a gun fight.

The guard had the distinct advantage in launching a counter attack - surprise. A hand gun is not a great choice against a rifle, but for a close quarters surprise, it would carry the day.
To locate the perp and get in close, he had a beacon to go for, i.e. the repeated shots from the perp. And, those shots would have concealed his approach.

Part of me says we should not stand in judgment of this deputy. But then I think back to that story of the coach, Aaron Feis, who threw himself in front of students at the cost of his own life. Imagine if, instead, Feis had held kids in front of himself, using them as human shields.
That is, in essence, what Deputy Scot Peterson did. He allowed kids to die so that he might live.

I have zero doubt that if I were an armed teacher, I’d look for the shooter in order to find ways to at least make the guy duck and stop shooting at my students. Not because I’m a hero, but because I’d view those young people as *my* students and not some random strangers.
Cowardice is not the fear of death - it’s the inability to overcome that fear in the accomplishment of your duty. And the cop’s primary duty - in the presence of a mass shooter - was to protect his charges.
His job was to maneuver carefully towards the shooter and keep him too busy to continue shooting students. He never made the effort.
The amusing thing is that this coward had had previous dealings with Cruz:
No one but the individual is responsible for their safety. All this BS about armed guards is just more diversion from talking about individuals being armed in schools.
Don't be so certain about how you would react. If you haven't been tested in a life or death circumstance, your reactions are a crap shoot.
Tell me about the times you have risked yours life to accomplish something either good or bad.
Being a cop and thinking one has what it takes can be different than reality when the SHTF....I agree it was his job/duty and he failed - just saying there are probably a lot railing against him, who think they would do oh-so better and even picture themselves running in and wiping the guy out, who might very well do exactly what he did if faced with the actual situation.
My experience in Vietnam combat was that it is almost impossible to predict how people will react when the going gets tough. The macho guys quite frequently were the first to break down. The hero’s typically were the least expected.
