Republican Congressman Calls for Raising Minimum Age to Buy AR-15s [Carlos Curbelo]

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.), who filed legislation banning bump stocks — which allows gun owners to turn semi-automatic weapons into automatic weapons, told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” on Tuesday that he supports raising the minimum age to buy semi-automatic weapons, like the one used in the Florida school shooting.

“I also support raising the minimum age. If an 18-year-old, a 19-year-old can’t buy a handgun — oh, and by the way, they also can’t buy a beer at a restaurant — why can they buy these powerful long guns that are capable of inflicting so much damage as we saw at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas last week?” Curbelo asked.

Curbelo, who considers himself “a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment,” said Congress needs to “strengthen 2nd Amendment rights for responsible gun owners, but we clearly have to do more to make sure guns stay out of the hands of those who want to harm innocent people.”

“So there’s some very obvious steps that we can take. I’m supporting universal background check legislation to make sure every gun transfer is run through the NICS, the background check system,” he said.

Curbelo noted that Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) “has a bill to allow the CDC to research gun violence in the context of public health.” …

Is he in favor of also raising the voting age?

Either 18 years are adults or they aren’t. If they can’t be trusted with guns, they have no business voting.

The air is thick with irony.

Shouldn’t we ban them from driving vehicles too? They can be dangerous...

Why not give them 15.00 an hour and give them an AR-15?

Trying not to sound like a troll, but I just don’t see how we win on this as a stand-alone proposal, especially given that the handgun age is already 21.

I could see maybe baiting the Dems with this, and then they’ll pile on whole boatload of crap, which will kill this proposal, along with everything else. Now that would be nice.

Oh, for God’s sake; bump stocks DO NOT turn semi-autos into full autos: They just pull the trigger; a shooter can pull the trigger himself just as quickly.

Add CCW national reciprocity. There, it’s dead.

If some firearms (handguns?) are at 21, then it is difficult to make the case for another firearm below 21.

But has this congressman also talked about raising the draft age to 21 (or above) since those 18 year olds “shouldn’t” have access to firearms?

I like it! See how much the Dems really want.

And while we’re at it, add in the requirement that ALL SCHOOLS which receive federal money allow concealed carry - let’s start using the power of the purse in our favor. And it would be fun to replace those sickening “Gun-Free School Zone” signed “Well-Armed School Zone” signs.

It may make us feel good, but pulling in the draft age and also the voting age won’t fly. We have to keep on topic, but we should be pulling in what we want too (such as armed schools).

I just don’t see how we win on this

I'm sure Trump has a plan that, once executed, we will say was brilliant.

Just after the whole Virginia "white nationalist"/Antifa kerfuffle last year, the statists cranked up the agitprop to derail Trump/impeach him etc.

Trump held a magnificent press conference and took charge of the narrative. In turn, many on the "right" also turned on Trump, like the CEOs quitting his Advqisory Council. People got worried...is this the End of Trump?

Ultimately, it was all a futile effort. America/Deplorables, no longer peopled by milquetoast Republicans, understood what Trump was saying (and that he wasn't Hitler's incarnate), the NeverTrumpers kept rambling while Antifa were unmasked as the terrorists that they are, the American Renaissance losers were rejected by Deplorables, and ultimately we got tax reform (among other things).

We are seeing EXACLY the same thing now...on the backs of dead children, the statists want to convert Florida - one of the most pro-gun states in the union (and a vital source of conceal carry reciprocity) - into Connecticut...then onto the rest of the nation. In the process, the MSM is looking under every rock and in every hole for "conservatives" willing to surrender their right to KABA in return for invitations to cocktail and pizza parties.

I'm waiting for Trump's magnificent plan this time around. Maybe he will tie "gun control" to the wall and DACA. Have Trump tweet something to this effect. Wait for the ensuing 3-days media storm of "using a tragedy for political gain." These poor children on CNN who should be healing but instead are being used and abused by their parents and Dems, will go back to school as the MSM moves on to the next group of people to use.

Ultimately, nothing gets done, freedom is saved (though doing something about the FBI blowing it would be nice) and statists wonder again how could they not get anything out of this tragedy...Russians!! Yeah, that's why...that's the ticket.

If 18 is too youn to own a gun, then it is also too young to vote. You wish to move the voting age up to 21 as well, we can talk because far more damage is done with votes than guns
