Trump focus on mental health after school shooting denounced

Frustration is mounting in the medical community as the Trump administration again points to mental illness in response to yet another mass shooting.

"The concept that mental illness is a precursor to violent behavior is nonsense," said Dr. Louis Kraus, forensic psychiatry chief at Chicago's Rush University Medical College. "The vast majority of gun violence is not attributable to mental illness."

Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old charged with killing 17 people on Valentine's Day at his former high school in Parkland, Florida has been described by students as a loner with troubling behavior who had been kicked out of school. His mother recently died and Cruz had been staying with family friends.

Since the shooting, his mental health has been the focus of President Donald Trump's comments. And on a Thursday call with reporters, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said the administration is committed to addressing serious mental illness and that his agency "will be laser-focused on this issue in the days, weeks, and months to come."

Mental health professionals welcome more resources and attention, but they say the administration is ignoring the real problem — easy access to guns, particularly the kind of high-powered highly lethal assault weapons used in many of the most recent mass shootings.

"Even for those who manage to survive gun violence involving these weapons, the severity and lasting impact of their wounds, disabilities and treatment leads to devastating consequences," American Medical Association President David Barbe wrote in an online column after the shooting.

"We are not talking about Second Amendment rights or restricting your ability to own a firearm. We are talking about a public health crisis that our Congress has failed to address. This must end," Barbe wrote.

This article isn’t a joke??? For one thing it contradicts what the left said about every terrorist attack - that we were dealing with some poor crazy individual. Now non-terror mass murders by insane people have no connection to inanity? It’s just the guns???

Wow! I looked at the comments, the first forty or so seemed pro-Trump and down on the “news” article. Then I noticed the likes and dislikes; astonishingly in favor of the pro-Trump comments. You’d think that the writer would look to see how his article is being received and adjust his view. Or, at least stop writing articles like that one. The publisher should take note also, as they are trying to sell their wares.

Medical community does not like to called on the carpet for their mistakes. Too many pharma drugs. And they wonder why we have a recreational drug problem?!

The “medical community” wants to ban guns and doesn’t want to hear about mental illness? The left is so evil and dangerous it’s beyond comprehension by a normal person. I guess it’s no surprise they fear any focus on insanity. Their own.

“The vast majority of gun violence is not attributable to mental illness.”

Nobody, including Trump, ever said it was. Gang bangers in Chicago are not mentally ill, they’re just criiminals. But every single school shooter - which was that Trump was talking about - has proven to be mentally ill or shown to have a history either of treatment or referrals to treatment long before they got to the shooting or bomb-building stage.

To make it worse, Florida has a law that makes it virtually impossible to get these kids out of the classroom or even out of the school so no matter how much trouble they cause and how many “warning signs” there are in the years leading up to the shooting, the schools are unable to protect their students.

We need to discuss not only getting the mentally ill out of the schools, but providing involuntary long-term residential treatment. This kid, Nicolaus, had a long history of violent behavior, including beating his mother; the police had been called 39 times. So clearly just sending them home is not the solution.

What should be looked into is the pharmaceuticals that have messed up the minds of many who were prescribed them. Also look into which pols receive donations from those who push these poisons.

Sure the vast majority of violence isnt directly related to mental illness but the vast majority of mass murders certainly are. How disingenuous can these so called experts be?

NO amount of laws or background checks can stop these events .If someone REALLY wants to kill a lot of people they WILL do it by any means necessary.he could have killed many more ramming into a crowd with a car or truck while they were lining up for school busses.

Worth saying again and again: “Liberalism is a mental disorder.”

Like firearms confiscation, putting even more people on psychotropic medicines or in counseling is just another ineffective treatment of the symptoms of the much larger problem of societal collapse, perpetrated by the Regressives in our midst.

The removal of religion from the public square, disintegration of traditional two-parent families, promotion of sexual perversion in multiple forms, destruction of cultural norms, conversion of the education system into a massive Socialist propaganda machine, the flooding of the media — music, movies, TV, news — with endless messages of violence, sex, and profanity, celebration of drug abuse, devaluation of human life through abortion, murder, and euthanasia.

The real culprits and the guilty in the Broward county High School slaughter.

- The Shooter - Nikolas Cruz
- The Social Services of Broward County, Florida
- The Broward County, Florida Sheriff & Police Force
- The DOJ/FBI massive failure to protect innocent Americans
- The parents and voters in Broward county that elected & supported these so-called, “progressive” incompetent, could care less public servants.

If you cannot figure this out...then you have been smoking too much reefer, drinking too much booze, are a Democrat liberal in Broward County, or are nuts, yourself. Case closed. God bless our dearest innocent, beautiful children & those adult heroes that gave their lives to protect these innocents. However, no prayers for your “Criminal” Democrat Congresswoman, Debbie Wassermann Schultz. If you voted for her or support her...you should hang your head in shame.

I agree, the vast majority of gun violence (as if guns are violent all by themselves) are not the result of mental illness, but the vast majority of mass shootings are done by people who have been heavily medicated for years. The over prescribing of meds for just about everything is evident all over. I know people in my own family who are on a wide range of meds from high blood pressure to anti-depressants, they’re like a walking pharmacy with their ever present bag of meds.

Well, if it’s not mental illness, then they must be evil, right? But I thought people couldn’t be evil because there is no God. Having a hard time keeping up these days...

Lock up the loonies.

The drugs don’t make them sane, they permit them to pass for normal until they don’t take their meds, or they augment them with recreational drugs, or or or... whatever happens before they experience a major malfunction.

The Left wants chaos in society and there is a subset within the radical Left that has embraced insanity as a rational balance to modern society.

The “medical community” rejects any connection between mass murder by crazy people and their mental illness.

Just like all scientists have a “consensus” on global warming. The left is nothing but destructive to honest discussion.

"The concept that mental illness is a precursor to violent behavior is nonsense," said Dr. Louis Kraus, forensic psychiatry chief at Chicago's Rush University Medical College

This guy is the problem in a nutshell.

The school shooting problem IS a problem, no use denying it.

And it is a psychiatry problem, first and foremost, a PUBLIC PSYCHIATRY problem.

Yes, teachers should be free to carry. Yes, schools should have restricted entrances that can be secured. Yes, there should be a plan to secure the interior of the building.

But just as having us kids learn to cover our necks so that the flying glass from NYC getting nuked wouldn't sever our 9-year old spinal cords bred a generation of peaceniks, teaching children that it's normal for crazy dangerous people to be walking around, and that there's nothing any grownup can do about it, will have its consequences as well.

Every kid in every school that has pre-violent sociopaths attending knows EXACTLY who they are, and many kids have already been threatened by them or are afraid they will be.

Mental illness is ABSOLUTELY a precursor to violence, and if you don't like calling it "mental illness" then focus on the behaviors that ALL school shooters exhibit before they do it, and target those kids and young adults for removal.

The whole public psychiatry establishment rests on a stupid Jack Nicholson movie and a stupid book by Thomas Szasz, and that needs to change.

Bingo. It also explains why the so-called medical community is so quick to dismiss mental illness as a factor in the shootings. They're afraid of liability for allowing these medicated nutcases to roam free.
