Liberals outraged: Trump wants to replace food stamps — with food!
The Washington Times ^ | 2-13-18 | Joseph Curl

In his big budget proposal Monday, President Trump offered a novel idea: Instead of giving needy people stamps they can redeem for food, why not just give them actual food?

As you might guess, liberals were enraged by the notion. How dare Mr. Trump try to take food stamps away from hungry people and give them — of all things — food?

Here’s how the liberal HuffPost saw it: “Facing a trillion-dollar deficit because of his just-passed tax cuts, President Donald Trump has an idea for how to get some of that money back: making poor people eat beans and rice.”

Oh, the humanity!

Currently, food stamps — known officially as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — are provided for some 42 million people, 80 percent of whom get food vouchers each month worth at least $90 per person. They can be redeemed at many stores for food, but the program is rife with abuse.

*SNIP*

Under the Trump proposal, those 80 percent of all SNAP recipients would get about half of their benefits in the form of a “USDA Foods package,” NPR reported. “The package was described in the budget as consisting of ‘shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables.’”

The program would be called “America’s Harvest Box.” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue called it “a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families — and all of it is home-grown by American farmers and producers.”

I grew up poor in, ‘The People’s Republik of Milwaukeestan’ in the 1960’s.

My Grandma (who we all lived with while Mom worked full time as a Secretary and Dad was going through his various apprenticeships at 25-cents an hour) would make the BEST Mac-N-Cheese with that Free Government Cheese! But, she could also pull together a meal for twelve with a boiled potato, a loaf of her homemade bread and whatever roadkill or fish Grandpa brought home that day. *HEART*

My family is the PERFECT example of getting a little hand OUT, then a hand UP, then OUT of the welfare system...and never looking back...other than to crave that Mac-N-Cheese, LOL!

Go pick up your food like I did. Catch a cross town bus, get a transfer and ride the second bus. Get out, walk to the government food distribution site. Box your sh!t up, and go home. Oh, by the way, get a trade or edjumacation. Get your stuff together. You will be glad you did.

“Why ignore the elephant in the room which is Corruption?”

The way *I* see it, is that PDJT is doing just that. Remove the opportunity for ‘cheating’ with your Food Stamps, and that’s a huge part of the battle right there. :)

Drug testing for any and ALL freebies granted via our Tax Dollars, too!

I know. I’m really mean that way. ;)

I don’t disagree.

I think the way we need to approach any and ALL problems created by Mother Government is from any and all fronts.

I feel so HOPEFUL that some of these issues will get resolved and We The People will be heard.

No one in Government has listened to ME since President Reagan - and even he was a tad tone deaf in some areas. We are so BLESSED to have PDJT. The guy just blows my mind. :)

“We need to do away with food stamps.”

I agree. EVERY charitable act needs to be through our churches and our LOCAL communities. Mother Government has he big, fat NOSE in so many places where it never belonged in the FIRST place!

When I was stationed in Germany, we would hoard/barter using that vacuum-packed chocolate milk - kind of looks like a kids juice box?

Day-um that stuff was good, LOL!

I’ve easily eaten my weight in MREs through the years. Sure beats going hungry! ;)

So, the leftists/socialists who claim that government knows best don’t think that government can handle food distribution?

They know danmed well that the “poor” use their benefits for things other than food, and they use them as a medium of exchange as well.

Giving them food would stop that, and the left doesn’t want that to happen.

“Except in the dead of winter, in most states, or regions, there is surplus *something*. Otherwise, the surplus *costs* money, being expensive to warehouse until it rots.”

We have always eaten ‘seasonally.’ That’s what NORMAL people do - you know, those of us that know where ‘food’ comes from in the first place? ;)

Wisconsin will donate: cheese, milk, sweet corn and cranberries!

These meal services require about an hour of cooking: many on food stamps probably prefer fast processed foods instead.

Good idea. We need to eradicate those critters.

But I was actually referring to Nutraloaf. You, like President Trump, are much kinder and gentler than I am.

It’s absurd to ignore corruption; it’s heartless to not have some kind of program to help those truly in need.

I think Trump has a great solution that can fix this problem or at least get it on the right track.

Food stamps/assistance/whatever you want to call it should not be the people in “need” buying lobster tails and filet mignon with benefit cards that look like credit cards.

If someone is found to be purposely defruading the system they should be removed from the rolls.

I considered it a given we were not going to make children walk ten miles per day. It’s the adults who need to be incentivized to get off government programs.

If the food isn’t microwave ready people will starve.

This is not that far fetched. Even people with money do not cook today. It is all about convenience. That brings another point. Convenience stores are where, in my opinion, much of the Food stamp money goes. Convenience stores are too tempting I think, whether you have money or not. If you don’t stop today, you will tomorrow. And so it goes.
