My sister was in Acapulco I bet 20 years ago. She said it made her nervous with the army guys with their rifles patrolling the beach. Of course she just stayed in the resort area so I told her she was probably safe.

I’ve only been to Barbados. The best part of the trip was exploring in a rental car. I suppose there is always a risk in doing that anywhere - but there were plenty of other tourists checking out the caves, old landmarks, etc.

About 10 years ago my sister went on a “chick trip” to Mexico with female relatives and friends. I told her to go somewhere else. Sure enough, her purse was stolen.

The resort city of Acapulco, a former playground of the rich and famous, is now at the centre of a crime wave that has swept across the country. Extortion, kidnapping and murder are daily events.

Yep, and Cancun can't be far behind.

Sad news. I was there in the 1970’s and even back then, we stayed in the resort areas, ate at an American chain restaurant or at the big hotels, watched the cliff divers, did go out to the big public market which was many booths in one central place. Did not venture out into the countryside.

Sadly, Baja’s Cabo San Juan and San Lucas are heading this direction too. 20 years ago I felt perfectly safe. The towns/resorts knew who buttered their bread, the tourists and they put a lot of money into security and police. My last time there 2 years ago... yeeesh. Gang violence, drug violence, murders, the entire atmosphere has changed.

My son and DIL are vacationing in Cancun. When I expressed my concern, they said they’d be sticking to the resort and escorted tours.

The good news is that our grandson is staying with DIL’s parents about five minutes away; we babysat for a few hours last night. He’s a joy at 17 months.

But this is not possible. Mexico has very strict gun control laws.

Acapulco: The resort killed by drugs, guns and gangs

1 for 3. It was killed by gangs, who were given means to acquire and motive to use guns by the criminalization of drugs. Notice that nobody's shooting up resorts over the addictive, mind-altering drug alcohol.

Liberals tell us that the solution to violence and crime in America is a total gun ban.

Mexico has a total gun ban.

Violence and crime is off the charts.
