I’m in NY and our HS hired a retired Sheriff... but won’t allow her to carry a gun. 😉

Total waste of money! Might as well have the janitor for security. In fact, if he’s big, he might be more useful.

We have millions of military Veterans and it’s time to take a stand. Wouldn’t cost the state a damn penny, two to three armed personnel at each school. There would be more volunteers than they’d know what to do with. Already trained and have proven they have the heart to fight and defend!

Take the Security details away from guberment officials and use them on important things like protecting the children.

I predict “gun free zones” will be going away soon.

You could easily get National Guard Troops some ADSW money to patrol the large schools like this one. Getting from Title 32 to Title 10 money would be the hard part.

Sorry. Schools are “gun-free zones” No can do.

We just need to make the "gun free zone" signs bigger....say a $300B program to make them from 8x11" placards to 4'x4' reflective road-like signs.

That would solve school shootings! /liberalism

There were two police officers on duty at the school at the time of the shooting. How many more do you think are needed?

The liberal school faculty is so mentally deranged when it comes to legal gun ownership that they look at all of us as though we are criminal murderers in the waiting. How on earth are they going to accept armed retired police and military in their surroundings?

The police officer would be carrying a firearm and not known to any employee of the school district to deter the potential threat.

If he isn't known to any employee of the school district then don't you think someone wandering the school halls without anyone knowing him isn't going to attract attention and raise questions?

But don’t pay them minimum wage. Pay them a decent salary.

Sorry, but you already have a building FULL of ‘employees’. Get the GOVT out of the way and stop ‘em from infringing upon their/our Rights.

If the teachers/admins/etc. wish to carry, as every OTHER Citizen has the inalienable Right to do, let them.

There’s no need for paid officers, ex-military, ‘volunteers’...

Just more ‘solutions looking for problems’ a la unconstitutional, intruding, interfering, infringing *GOVT*.

Why don’t these schools have escape ladders from each classroom?

Please don’t confuse the average teacher with the liberal and corrupt union leadership, or with the liberal and corrupt central administrators.

I spent many years teaching in a large urban school district. I’d estimate that perhaps 40% of my fellow teachers were conservative. And there were quite a few NRA members among us.

There is a change of philosophy in regards to active shooters and response to them. Before, it was common practice to “shelter in place.” This meant the school was locked down and kids hunkered down and waited until the police came.

The philosophy changed when it was determined that all that was doing was keeping kids in harms way. The “new” philosophy is for kids to escape if possible, barricade if necessary and fight back as a last resort. As a matter of fact, some teachers now have bowls of marbles on their desks in case of emergency, thinking they can be thrown at an intruder.

While there is no perfect solution, as long as we have “gun-free zones, we will continue to have these types of shootings. Notice that most shootings involve schools, churches, and bars. All areas that are identified as gun-free.

I can’t remember one shooting involving a gun store.

As for placing retired LEO’s in schools. While it could be beneficial, there already is Federal legislation that allows retired LEO the right to carry concealed. HOWEVER, if the area is designated as a gun-free zone, you must abide by it.

I am in a unique position of being a retired LEO and also a retired teacher. All of my students knew I was a retired cop, most thought I still carried and in 12 years in the classroom, I NEVER had an incident. Cause and effect? Could be.

I think allowing staff members to carry could be a viable option, but then who keeps tabs on the mental health of those staff members who are carrying? Today the teacher may be “normal” tomorrow after a messy divorce, not so much.

There is no perfect answer. But the more restrictions we place on guns. the greater the exposure for gun-related incidents like Florida.
