Yelena Matveyeva was eagerly awaiting what she hoped would be her husband's return to Russia from Syria, where he had been allegedly fighting for months as a mercenary alongside forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Spirits buoyed that he could be home in weeks, she decided to buy a new dress. While in a store in Asbest, their hometown in Russia's Sverdlovsk region, east of Moscow, she got a call from a friend.

Matveyeva said her friend asked her if she had heard anything from her husband or Igor Kosoturov, another military contractor from Asbest. "I said, 'I haven't been able to call him for three days,'" Matveyeva recounts. "Literally, in a minute he calls me back and says, 'Stasa [her husband Stanislav] and Igor are dead.'"

battle-pig

A large (fat or manly) female that mingles with a group of incredibly attractive women in night clubs. The battle pig will scare away men attempting to interact with the attractive females. The only way to bypass the battle-pig is for a self-sacrificing man to offer himself to the battle pig so that his friends may get close to the attractive females.

Dude, I can’t get with that chick with the battle-pig in the way.

And, admit it. We have all woken up next to a battle-pig (and sworn off alcohol forever). Lessons learned, and all that.

What did she expect? The russians care little about casualties of their military, and mercenaries are way below that.

How often, historically, have pigs actually been thrown into battle? Is this a common occurrence? What she is referring to is, in the Middle Ages, dead animals were often used in sieges, being allowed to ripen in the sun a few days before being catapulted over the castle walls to splat all inside the enemy stronghold..................

Well, the M-60 was known as "the pig".

And after the sappers had done their job of tunneling under the walls they used to shove dead pigs in the tunnel and light them on fire. The heat would cause the walls to crack and sometimes collapse entirely.

Aside from that I got nothing.

The Hatfield-McCoy feud was according to some accounts about a pig but I would not call what they did "battle".

“Reminds me of the scene at the beginning of “The Enemy at the Gates” where they gave ever other soldier ONE rifle. The idea being after your comrade gets killed by the Germans you pick up his rifle and fight.”

And then the political officers behind the line who would help stiffen the resolve to fight by shooting anyone who retreated.

There are no “good guys” or “bad guys” in this fight. I sometimes wonder if “the fight” doesn’t simply exist as a way to bleed off global jihadis. Get them killed off there, otherwise they’ll cook off in other places.

I have learned more, today, than I did all of last year. I had absolutely no idea that pigs had so much utility. Until today, I thought bacon was pig’s greatest contribution to society.

From the TV show "Archer":

Archer: "Cry havoc, and let slip the hogs of war!"
Lana: "Dogs of war."
Archer: "Whatever farmyard animal of war, Lana!!!"

"...You are a “red-shirt” on Star Trek basically..."

That was a great post...but...really. What are they thinking? They have all these Syrian soldiers sitting around, and someone has to run through clouds of shrapnel to do something...is it going to be: "Mahmood, you go!" or "Vasily...you go!"

I admit I have stopped paying attention. I have been unable to sort it out. I can’t even use “The enemy of my enemy...”

What a frigging Charlie Foxtrot.

Good post.

Any contractor going into battle of any kind, with armor, must know they will be degraded when they have no air power assets.

They knew they were going against US backed Kurds. They had to see our air assets overhead. Did they think we would be dropping candy?

No, they died because of greed and stupidity.

BTW, looks like about 200 of the 600 kia were Russian/Ukrainian mercs. The other 400 were mostly local militia and Assad troops.

Also when they lay siege and were trying to sapp the walls they would throw pigs on a fire under the stonework to get the rock really hot. They then hit the stone with cold water to fracture it.

Pigs burn pretty good back when they were actually fat and round.
