North Texas teacher dies after getting the flu
Chron ^ | February 6th 2018 | William Axford

Heather Holland, a second-grade teacher at Ikard Elementary School with the Weatherford Independent School District died over the weekend, the Weatherford Democrat reports. Holland got sick about a week ago and took medication, but delayed picking up the prescription due to the $116 copay, according to the newspaper.

By Friday night, Holland's condition worsened and she was taken to the hospital. Her husband Frank Holland told the Weatherford Democrat that she died Sunday morning.

"She loved helping people, helping the kids, and the kids loved her," Holland's husband told the Weatherford Democrat.

Charlotte LaGrone, a spokeswoman for Weatherford ISD, told news station CBS DFW that counselors are available at the school for the rest of the week to help students and school staff cope with the sudden loss. She added that custodians started deep cleaning the district's schools in December to keep students from getting sick, and that the specific campus where Holland was employed had received an additional cleaning on Friday, Feb. 2.

This year's flu season has been particularly deadly, with flu-related deaths being reported across the nation. Last month, five flu-related deaths were reported in the greater Houston area. The CDC reports the flu is widespread across America this year and possibly won't peak until March.

Tamiflu would have saved her. Even Amoxil could have saved her if it were bacterial pneumonia. Very sad situation.

Good point! Walmart and Costco are not the place to be during a flu epidemic.

Does tamiflu prevent sepsis, I wonder? What exactly is it, an antibiotic, an antibacterial, anti inflammatory?

There’s no guarantee the meds would have helped with the flu. and the copay would have been there on any Obamacare plan as well. She probably decided to wait it out and see if she needed to buy it - that it, gambled and lost. Now the second graders get to hear the news.

That is for the generic. You don’t think I would pay too much for this muffler do you? ;-)

Unfortunately this flu seems to be tracking the pre 1918 WWI flu. Young and healthy die. Next year is what scares me. When it mutates which way will it go.

"but delayed picking up the prescription due to the $116 copay"

If that is true it is very sad. You would think that someone educated enough to be working as a teacher could manage their money well enough to have either $116 in cash available, or a credit card with $116 in available credit and know not to delay in purchasing needed medications.

A teacher with 3 years of experience at Weatherford earns a salary of $49,436 for the 10 month school year. Source

If the news report is true it stands as a stark reminder to everyone that it is essential to treat this year's flu immediately, and keeping at least $1000 in an emergency fund could save your life.

What a terrible loss for her family, the school community and our society.

“...and Costco...”

But the free food out in the open at the ends of the aisles is SOOO yummy!

(Disclaimer - I have NEVER eaten any of those samples! Although I have mouthed off at the servers a few times as they block the aisles.)

This year’s flu shot is only 10% to 30% effective.

People are not taking sufficient quantities of Vitamin D.

Yup. If you get enough sunlight on your skin you can produce your own Vitamin D... but that isn't really feasible in the winter.

I don't take any Vitamin D supplements, but I consume a lot of pickled herring in the winter to boost my Vitamin D intake.

One day last month I came down with something that felt like it was going to turn into a VERY bad cold. I had a phlegmy cough, headachy from sinus pressure, etc. I put oregano essential oil into a diffuser to get the vapors in my house. The next day the cold was gone. First real illness I've had in three or four years.

My 8 year old granddaughter who had her flu shot in September is recovering from the flu. Her pediatrician’s office was full and couldn’t work her in until the next afternoon. My daughter took her to an urgent care center and said it was packed with children and adults. There were signs saying to put on a mask so she put a mask on Brooke. Very cute with Winnie the pooh on it. She tested positive for the flu and was prescribed Tamiflu. The copay was 183.00 which was pricey but not an issue because it was needed but Cleveland TN has no Tamiflu due to the outbreak and she was told to come back the next day and they would have it. They had ordered it from Atlanta. a pharmacist was going to drive down there to get some. daughter and son-in-law decided to just deal with it without the Tamiflu.

All is well, she is back to her sassy feisty self but Remington the English springer spaniel hasn’t decided if she has recovered completely and is really getting on her nerves. She is whining that “Remi is stalking me!”

No hospital for me this time around, and I am praying I can avoid that in the future too. I cannot rest in the hospital, not with the nurses checking every hour to see how I am.

Rox balls. I pay less under GoodRx than if my insurance covered it. BTW, if you are on lipitor, Meyers gives it away free. (Cholesterol blocker)

We can’t afford our $2,100 Monthly Healthcare Premium (up 120% since December of 2013 thanks to Obamacare), but nobody is writing a Story about us.

I had no idea that all that sacrificing to fund my IRA all these Years would be pissed away once the Country decided that a Mulatto Marxist would make a great President.

I think they’re dying of sepsis. That’s when your body over reacts to the threat of illness and produces far too many white blood cells that suffocate major organs . Happens fast.

No they didn’t want to waste $116. They thought she’d be ok. Kind of like driving tipsy. You will be on most times but you may actually size a wreck too.
