I tried (and failed) to get a safe and legal abortion in Brazil

I'm a 30-year-old Brazilian with two young children, temporary employment and hopes for an eventual legal career. When I sought permission to terminate my pregnancy, I was thinking about my family, my finances and my future. In the process I found myself at the center of a political story, becoming the first woman in our country to fight for an abortion in court based on personal, nonmedical needs. Last month, the United States marked the 45th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade — a landmark decision that secured the right of American women to have an abortion. It remains the law of the land, despite repeated attempts to reverse the decision. Since filing my petition with Brazil's Supreme Court last year, many people have compared my suit to Jane Roe's. But there is one crucial difference: She won. The court denied my plea and women in Brazil continue to risk their health and lives if they decide to terminate a pregnancy.

Brazil has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world. Women are only able to access legal abortion services if the pregnancy is the result of rape, if a woman's life is at risk or if the fetus is without a brain or skull. But restricting access to abortion services does not stop women from getting them. Each year, at least half a million Brazilian women have an abortion that doesn't meet the legal requirement — almost one every minute.

Women take a gamble when they seek these services. Abortions often take place in unlicensed, underground clinics where the care ranges from safe to deadly. Whether you're rich or poor can dictate whether you receive a safe procedure or have to resort to dangerous methods. I couldn't pay for one of the clinics wealthy women use, and I...

She will have to live with that decision all of her life. How many sleepless nights?

In the days and weeks that followed the court's denial, I was threatened, offered money and adoption services...

I don't get what is so bad about choosing adoption. It's a win-win-win in my estimation.

Medical care is “free” in Brazil. Locals refer to it as a “butcher shop”. I detest abortion but think this is Fake News.

Each year, at least half a million Brazilian women have an abortion (...) - almost one every minute.

And God weeps over every one.

Rather strange they push the idea that giving birth is more dangerous than getting an abortion...

Of course, la petite fleur makes no mention of a husband or who was the sperm donor for the 3rd child whose life she snuffed out.

Damn she fugly. Someone must have been very drunk to schlong that beast. And now her soul is even uglier. Her ‘legal career’ won’t help her when she’s judged in the world to come.

I was thinking about ... my future...

Maybe your short term. maybe. But, not your medium-term future. And definitely NOT your long-term very-hot future.

Also, the order here is noted, from first to least: "... my family, my finances and my future. "

I think what you might fail to take into account is just how selfish and self-absorbed these women might be. To them, their freedom for what’s left of the 9 months, is more important than their own child. Their reputations needn’t suffer....And heck, a pregnancy might ruin their perfect little bodies. I know my five ruined mine - but I wouldn’t trade my 20 year old body for my children for all the beauty, wealth or power in the world. I wish these poor women understood what a gift a baby truly is.

Yes, I was wondering how her husband felt about it.

Oh, wait...

She’ll be a great lawyer.

It’s impossible to get a safe abortion, someone always dies.

“The court denied my plea and women in Brazil continue to risk their health and lives if they decide to terminate a pregnancy.”

Thus proving that maybe Brazils is not quite the s-hole we all think it is.

And by the way, how much did she pay to get knocked up? It had to be something, given that picture.

But that way nobody dies for the noble cause of women’s freedom. All revolutions have their martyrs. Some or just way, way, younger than others. What’s a fetus or a million if it means women get to deny their biology.
