Rep. Joe Kennedy III addressed DACA recipients in Spanish during his response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night.
Unfortunately for him, the liberal base may have found his attempts to be more offensive than they were honorable. People pointed out his lack of fluency and the obvious attempt to pander to immigrants.
Multiple people noted that it could be “condescending” to assume that DACA recipients do not speak English and need to be addressed in Spanish.
“News alert: dreamers speak more English than Spanish,” Father Jonathan Morris tweeted. “They came here as kids.”

We used to spend a lot of time in Mexico. Hubby and ex sis in law speak Spanish. They’d have full on conversations with people while I stood there looking stupid. Lol. The Mexican people didn’t mind and seemed to enjoy it.

Being one of those ‘Ugly Americans’ of the 50s & 60s (at least we spent money building their economy) I also reckoned that in order to get along in a foreign land all one had to do was ‘understand the money’ be able to order a drink and/or get a date but we normally picked up enough ‘jibberish’ to half carry on a conversation - though I will admit that each side managed to garner up plenty of ‘dumb looks’ when attempting to communicate.

Spoke with my mom today and asked her what she thought of kennedy speaking in spanish during the rebuttal.
She wasn’t aware that he had spoken in spanish!!!
I also have to admit that I didn’t realize that he had slipped into spanish till he was halfway done spanishing. His cadence was mesmerizing.
