White House proposes path to citizenship for 1.8 million people
CNN ^

Posted on 01/25/2018 2:19:04 PM PST by janetjanet998

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump is proposing giving 1.8 million young undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship in exchange for $25 billion for his long-promised wall and a host of other strict immigration cuts, according to a framework proposed Thursday. The outlines of the deal were described by a White House official for staff on Capitol Hill that CNN was given access to on Thursday afternoon. In what the White House official called a "dramatic concession," Trump would accept a path to citizenship for not just those originally eligible for DACA but for a broader population, adding up to 1.8 million people, the official said.

The DACA 800k are documented. The extra million might be fake. But we have to allow them to stay under those conditions (no chain, etc) because there is no practical way to get them to leave.

If you have a plan to get them to leave, then spell it out.

This is the same mistake Reagan made.

Wall, deportations, e-verify first - then legal status can be discussed, with citizenship as only an extreme bargaining chip.

if this is true, Trump gave away his only bargaining chip

Oh get a grip. St. Ronnie was the worst with amnesty. Trump is out of the county so who is saying he said any of this. Monday we will find out the facts. Trump is the best President we have had in history and that is no lie.

Trump has never talked about 1.8 million getting amnesty. Never.
You are wrong.

a lot of self denial on the site .

In my case my support for Trump is not blind or unconditional. I reject the “he can do no wrong” position.

There are not enough states and congressional districts that are conservative enough to get a GOP majority without and GOPe. It's a pipe dream. In reality we have to deal with the Dems plus a dozen soft-on-immigration senators. The House might be a little better.

The fact is we will get the best possible deal with Trump. Not with Hillary or McMuffin. The sad reality is Trump is our last chance and imperfect. We can only take the 1.8m, the wall, and policies to encourage the other 10m or so illegals to get out.

You want to deport 12m instead of 10? Well that might not seem like a difference but without a wall (i.e. real border security) then we won't deport anyone permanently. So we trade. Keep 2m out of 12m or so, build the wall, end chain, etc.

TRUMP is giving these Invaders citizenship

Trump is trading eventual (say 10 year) citizenship in exchange for actual border security. He can't build a wall without the trade.

Can you tell me when Trump disappointed you last?

If not, then shut up and let him let this play out.

If he requires 10 yrs for them to become citizens and jump through a bunch of other things, much like anyone who, “gets in line and follows the law of how to become a citizen” then is that ok?

And, they can’t vote until they are citizens...would that be ok???

I’d suggest that is what we are asking for anyway.

We don’t have to do a thing .

There is no crisis .

Why do a thing .

Enforce the laws on the books and they will leave .

There is no Crisis to be solved .

It’s a Dem media scam and don’t believe it .

Tie a NO VOTING stipulation to the deal. THEN the Democrats will truly reveal themselves.

Any deal Trump makes he’ll want his conditions met first before the Dems get what they want. They want full amnesty for tens of millions of illegals, not the measly 1.8 million for the Dreamers. They don’t support a border wall, the end of chain migration, or a lottery system. They will never support any deal with those stipulations. In other words, the Democrats will get crumbs and not the whole loaf of bread if they sign on to this deal. That’s why it won’t be agreed upon by them. It’s easier for them to try and drive the president out of office and deal with Pence, and of course who’s third in line in the succession to the presidency if they drive him out too? Know your enemy Freepers. The president gets who the Democrats are. Apparently a lot of you still don’t!

My problem is that he is giving away his last bargaining chip - full citizenship - before negotiations have seriously begun. Unless he’s planning on giving away more.

>>>Look at the source, FAKE NEWS!

Apparently not. More likely this is true...and it is Trump bargaining. It's the art of negotiation. He is giving them more than they asked for but in return, he is asking for something he knows they won't give. That way he doesn't have to give it and he wins the argument by being able to tell the country "I tried"

"The fundamental problem is that citizenships/naturalizations cannot be taken back once they are done..."

Might want to check on this one again.

=============================================

Skimbell beat me to it. And he's correct. The Constitution gives Congress almost unlimited power in writing the citizenship and naturalization laws.

(Congressional power in this area has been limited mostly by the 14th Amendment.)

Therefore, Congress could certainly write a citizenship law for the DACA kids that would allow for revocation on almost any "reasonable" basis.

Moreover, anybody who thinks citizenship can't be withdrawn under current law needs to talk to some of those German and East European guys who got deported for alleged WW2 misdeeds.

(Think John Demjanjuk.)

The headline should read, “DONALD TRUMP PROPOSES DESTROYING AMERICA.” The caption underneath should read, “Banana Republic Inevitable”

Bullcrap, first just enforce the 1986 mechanisms that the American people were promised. Employ an illegal, you go to jail, illegal in your school district you notify authorities. Next, if you are undocumented self-deport with assistance. If not, you will never sleep well because 1986 mechanism will be enforced and ICE will be in full force.

Also, the wall is easily breached based on boats, airplanes, expired visas, Canada, the next Administrations/Congress, political asylum, etc... You need to kill demand, sorry Chamber of Commerce.

Only fools will fall for this wall. The wall would just be a sign of laziness and futility by our public servants who constantly lie, deceive, and fool the lot with all kinds of false promises (Including Trump on his airplane in 2015 after he announced running/deportation for DACA "recipients").

This is a huge deal breaker and no spin will work because I still have 1986, Reagan, and Senator Allen Simpson still in my mind.
