WASHINGTON President Trump blew up Republican strategies to keep the government open past Friday when on Thursday morning he said a long-term extension of the popular Childrens Health Insurance Program should not be part of a stopgap spending bill pending before the House.
Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump - CHIP should be part of a long term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension! 7:37 AM - Jan 18, 2018 7,352 7,352 Replies 7,482 7,482 Retweets 35,666 35,666 likes
With a possible government shutdown looming this weekend, the House had planned to vote late Thursday on a stopgap spending bill that would keep government funding flowing to Feb. 16 as delicate negotiations continue to protect young, undocumented immigrants brought illegally as children from deportation.
But by midday Thursday, the chances of a shutdown appeared to be rising. Efforts to negotiate a broader budget deal that would protect young undocumented immigrants, raise spending for military and domestic programs and fund childrens health care had been making progress until Mr. Trump referred to African nations as shithole countries last week. The ensuing uproar upended budget and immigration talks and emboldened Democrats. On Thursday, senior House Democrats introduced a resolution to censure the president for his words.
Republicans, hoping to keep the government open while tempers cool, turned to a one-month stopgap spending measure, but that gambit may be nearing a dead end. Illustrating the trouble, Virginias two Democratic senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, whose constituents include hundreds of thousands of federal workers, announced together that they would oppose the temporary spending bill. They had been seen as among the most likely yes votes in the Senate, where Republican leaders need at least nine Democrats to support the bill.

Fixed it.
I think President Trump has calculated that a shutdown would hurt the Dems more than him. It’s easy to say that Dems prefer illegal aliens over paying the military. Dems are going to cave on something big...if not before the shutdown then during the shutdown.
Hope he's not wrong, but now you have Republicans like Graham saying they won't vote for another continuing resolution. How can he blame the Democrats when he can't get his own party onboard?
I hope Trump is baiting them into a shutdown.
I think a lot of govt workers will find themselves permanently furloughed. Maybe Trump will withhold Congressional staff pay as well.
What's next? A flaming bag of dog poop on the White House doorstep? The Dems have become masters of the meaningless gesture.
I should have said Dems and RINO's. A shutdown hurts dems and rino on immigration more then it hurts Trump on anything else.
Nope!! The President in the tweet I got expressed the desire that the CHIP program be fixed long term not just for 30 days. Ryan had stuck CHIP out of nowhere in the CR to make it look like if you weren’t for the CR — you hated children. That was a slick trick. Trump signaled that was an unacceptable ploy and was too serious for such tactics. I side fully with the president here.
The damned government is going to shut down anyway with no democrat votes because they demand amnesty for illegal aliens over the military and that is not going to happen. Also ,it is my prediction that it will be a very long shut down until the leftist get off this amnesty kick. I really don’t care, personally.
Democrats are used to trading short term concessions (in this case a few days extension) or movement toward concessions (like moving toward a merit system in immigration) to obtain long tern permanent concessions.
Trump has ended that.
The GOP is not HIS party. They never were.
The GOP needs to be destroyed.

I think Trump thrives in chaos.
Yep, and Grahamnesty golfing with Trump giving him advice was always going to lead to backstabbing.
Linda is with Durbin.
What you say now SC GOP primary voters?

NYT working on the fake news awards for 2018 already?
Never mind Trump denied saying this several times. Never mind many of the people there denied he ever said it. Don’t even MENTION that - just accept the Democrat lie as a fact, report it as a fact and move on.
It’ll be a good day in America when these scumbags finally go out of business.
I recall Trump predicting a shutdown in September.
I recall Trump promising to sign anything reasonable Congress could get to him.
I recall Trump making clear what he did get was absurd.
That’s plenty of rope given.
As I keep noting: a shutdown doesn’t end “essential services”, and in doing so clearly shows what can be slashed - and IS slashed, so long as a “no back pay” furlough lasts indefinitely.
Trump could achieve a 50% reduction in actual gov’t spending this way, when DC typically bickers fiercely over minute reductions in the rate of increase.
So what if he did say it? Are the democrats that thin skinned?
Our Constitution's republican (little r) form of government, though designed to provide for reflection and debate, was never intended to be used for petty political games by small-minded men and women intent on pursuing Progressive, Partisan interests instead of the preservation of liberty!
“I think Trump thrives in chaos.”
Trump enjoys high-stakes conflict. He uses chaos/conflict to his advantage. I understand he uses total shutdowns over petty grievances to his purposes: he’ll withhold payment for major projects due to small issues until huge demands/terms are met.
Go ahead, Democrats, hold up full government funding over an issue voters care little about - the trap is set.
“The Dems have become masters of the meaningless gesture.”
The GOPe taught them how this is done. Words far more than actions; that’s they way the game is played.
I don’t know. The media has always been successful in portraying these things as the Republicans’ fault. They will undoubtedly paint it the same way now...all the fault of that dastardly Trump and the Republicans.
