2017 was the hottest year since global records began that was not given an additional boost by the natural climate cycle El Niño, according to new data. Even without an El Niño, the year was still exceptionally hot, being one of the top three ever recorded.
The three main global temperature records show the global surface temperature in 2017 was 1C above levels seen in pre-industrial times, with scientists certain that humanitys fossil fuel-burning is to blame.
The data, published on Thursday, means the last three years have been the hottest trio ever seen, with 2017 ranking second or third depending on the small differences between the temperature records. Furthermore, 17 of the 18 hottest years recorded since 1850 have occurred since 2000.
While climate change deniers continue to bury their heads in the sand, global warming continues unabated, said Prof Michael Mann, at Pennsylvania State University in the US. And the impacts of that warming unprecedented wildfires, superstorms and floods are now plain for all to see. There has never been greater urgency.
Despite our best efforts so far, global warming continues apace, said Prof Martin Siegert, at Imperial College London. This is yet another wake-up call to develop a zero carbon economy before its too late.
The 2017 global temperature was accurately predicted by the Met Office a year before, adding to confidence that scientists have a good understanding of the climate system.

I have to confess that I’m now enjoying this thing for pure entertainment value. That chicken little guy sure can dance!
When you know the truth, its all such laughable BS.
New data or newly cooked old data?
2017 was the most mild summer I have experienced in a decade or so. Or it felt like it
Plus the 5 degree temps towards the end of the year.
Hottest ever, up is down, left is right, rich is poor newspeak is getting pathetic
Central TX has had lows of 8 degrees this week, with sleet and snow. We want some of that warming they keep promising us.
This means they looked at the data every which way they could until they found a way to say it was ‘the hottest’. That’s like what Marian Barry said about DC “Outside of the killings, D.C. has one of the lowest crime rates in the country.”
My larger than ever December-January electric bill is wondering why political scientists are commenting on real science?
WHEW, ... I was looking for you.
Yes, of course, they can just algebraically subtract the influence of El Nino from the overall climate change and Voila!.....Out comes the answer they’re looking for. What a surprise. What a bunch of lying psychopaths.
Is that with or without temperature “adjustments” and “data smoothing?”
Hottest? What a laugh! Here is a chart of the hottest days of August in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Why Tulsa? I’m too lazy to bring up others which you can by typing in the zip code, then hitting “Historic Averages”.

The 1930s were murder! No Air conditioning!

I keep hearing it is an El Nino year.
For my location, 2017 had the fewest “air conditioner days” in past 10 years.
The major power company in Louisville took a HUGE financial hit because of our extremely mild summer and winter last year.
Of course, this is all local weather, but after a while you just get tired of the weatherman telling you that it’s raining all over the world while you’re putting on your sunscreen before laying out by your pool in the hot sun.
“said Prof Michael Mann”
Says the man who invented the Hockey stick graph. The Man who invented the “Fudge Factor” in computer software.
These people are sick. All there results come from manipulation of Data and outright lies.
2016 was the hottest -- they claimed -- and the news reports did the same thing. Failed to mention by how much.
It finally came out that it was 1/100 of a deg/F. And, they mention, also in the small print, that their measurements are only accurate to 1/10 deg/F..
So, meaningless.
Good scientists would call it “the same”.
