Wisconsin Democrats on Tuesday flipped a state Senate seat in a GOP-leaning district, prompting excitement among local party official

Patty Schachtner (D) defeated state Rep. Adam Jarchow (R) in a special election to replace a senator who left for a job in Gov. Scott Walker's (R) administration, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Schachtner, the chief medical examiner in Wisconsin's St. Croix County, won in the state's 10th Senate district, which voted heavily for President Trump and Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the past two presidential elections.

Despite Schachtner's win, Democrats remain in the minority in the state senate, according to the Journal Sentinal.

Schachtner's victory in the western Wisconsin district drew attention from U.S. Rep. Ted Lieu, who suggested Tuesday night's result was a sign of things to come.

This has to do with the ‘polarization ‘ in the country, and it’s downside. The 20% in the middle, only come out in presidential years. You then have the left and right battling it out in off years - ‘moderates’ don’t come out in off years, unless a pressing issue has them come out.

When Bush was President, his war against Sadam was very unpopular - GOP lost the house.

Obama was president, Obamacare and it’s cost was very unpopular - RATs lost the house, then Senate.

The RATs and media, have now made Trump the issue - hard to change Trump’s image at this point.

The GOP is hoping tax cuts (policy) will overcome Trump’s image issues. This might work, it’s gonna be hard to overcome.

Have moderate voters in my office, pro conservative, 2nd Amendment, etc, but probably won’t come out in the mid-terms to help Trump.

We should be able to hold Senate.

IF the GOP want to maintain the Majority in both houses, they best get their act together and Back President Trump.

Many States are having GOP Legislators retire, or get promoted to a Fed Level position. My State Sen is up for a Federal judicial appointment. US Senator is retiring, can’t get reelected bad poll numbers for the Crook. US GOP Rep is running for his seat. Which will leave her seat open already has multiple wanna be’s lined up for it. Another is running for Governor.

Old Turtle Mitch is polling 19% and Heller @ 22% in their own state.

We saw this under GWB, the GOP got greedy, did nothing they promised to get elected, and voters turned them out the next Mid Term Election. Same is going to happen in 2018.

Just curious, did you support Trump prior to him being President?

The hand-wringing is....interesting. I’ve had the same experience as you. Even some fence-sitters who voted for Trump...are still supportive. Especially after the tax bill.

the GOP took Sd58 in Wisconsin...just to balance out what you said...the GOP took 2 other special elections in the US as well! (so 3 out of 4 isn’t bad!)

Media formula: print only good news about Democrats and only bad news about Republicans.

I agree. There is a lot of good news to run on. Tax Bill, Market, unemployment numbers, 83% increase in MS-13 arrested..the list goes on. But if the GOP "stay at ease in zion" and don't get out the vote, and puts it all on Trump's back. We will get slapped in 2018.

Trump is fighting day-in and day-out. He needs our help.

AFAIK all 3 of those wins were merely holding already-Republican seats, not pickups of seats formerly held by a Democrat, and as such were expected to be victories.

Which means what...? That it not possible that we could have lost the seats?

Yes, it's good news that it wasn't only 2 out of 4 or worse.

If your favorite football team has 4 easy games -- expected wins -- coming up and wins then 3 of them it's time to celebrate, right?

Yeah that’s totally what I meant, smh.

The graveyard-whistlers and excuse makers who think that losing a district in a purple or red state (a district which Trump won overwhelmingly) is anything but bad news are idiots.

To make the same excuses over and over again is even more idiotic.

President Trump isn’t to blame for an individual loss in some obscure state legislative election, but to keep denying reality by trying to put a happy face on everything isn’t terribly helpful. Facing reality is a lot more helpful, though some people here don’t have the stomach for that.

Winning 3 out of 4 off year elections is good news and yes, we should celebrate and not pearl clutch like trolls.

Media formula: print only good news about Democrats and only bad news about Republicans.

Exactly. The local Milwaukee paper, which is owned by Gannett and is a USAToday clone, has a screaming headline today that is effusively giddy that a Dem flipped a Republican seat. No mention in the headlines that there were two special elections with Republicans retaining the other seat. And, they are working overtime to help Tammy Baldwin (D) as she is up this year and thought to be vulnerable.

https://www.postandcourier.com/politics/republican-nancy-mace-wins-statehouse-district-election/article_37689baa-fb03-11e7-8ea4-6feac19bbafa.html In South Carolina a Republican female held an open seat vacated by a Republican male who resigned while under criminal investigation. Sorry worriers but the sky is not falling.
