Damage from extreme weather events during 2017 racked up the biggest-ever bills for the U.S. Most of these events involved conditions that align intuitively with global warming: heat records, drought, wildfires, coastal flooding, hurricane damage and heavy rainfall.
Paradoxical, though, are possible ties between climate change and the recent spate of frigid weeks in eastern North America. A very new and "hot topic" in climate change research is the notion that rapid warming and wholesale melting of the Arctic may be playing a role in causing persistent cold spells.
It doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to suppose that losing half the Arctic sea-ice cover in only 30 years might be wreaking havoc with the weather, but exactly how is not yet clear. As a research atmospheric scientist, I study how warming in the Arctic is affecting temperature regions around the world. Can we say changes to the Arctic driven by global warming have had a role in the freakish winter weather North America has experienced?
t's hard to nail down whether this weather pattern overall warmer winters in North America but longer cold snaps will persist. Understanding the mechanisms behind these complex interactions between natural influences and human-caused changes is challenging.
Nevertheless, research is moving forward rapidly as creative new metrics are developed. Our best tools for looking into the future are sophisticated computer programs, but they, too, struggle to simulate these complicated behaviors of the climate system. Given the importance of predicting extreme weather and its impacts on many aspects of our lives, researchers must continue to unravel connections between climate change and weather to help us prepare for the likely ongoing tantrums by Mother Nature.

LACK OF SUNSPOTS
I think that if you were to view the sun over thousands of years in time-lapse you would see it flicker like a candle.
And I bet this would correspond to global warming and cooling trends.
Nevertheless, research is moving forward rapidly as creative new metrics are developed. Our best tools for looking into the future are sophisticated computer programs, but they, too, struggle to simulate these complicated behaviors of the climate system.
Those same computer models do a rotten job predicting the weather for the coming weekend.
Who needs science when you have fairy tales, credulous liberals, a stock narrative to reinforce, and "intuition." I would believe "intuition," MAYBE, if the author were a woman. Whoever heard of "man's intuition"?
They also missed a gigantic 20 year “global warming pause” and a ten year “hurricane drought.” But we shouldn’t quibble. What’s a few decades among friends?

Maybe they should make it clear before they publish this crap.
Yes! Yes! Warming is responsible for cold! When will you people wake up ?!
Everyone is denying The Jet Stream ,it’s very powerful , I love it , when it dips deep into the US it brings warm air up to us and makes us toasty ,LOL
No, professor. Just like the spots in the Antarctic that are melting due to underground volcanic activity has nothing to do with the scam of Glow Bull Warming.

If people stopped and thought about the actual history of this planet, they should be grateful we’re in a warm phase. We may actually be descending back into an Ice Age. Ice Ages are bad for humans. A mile of ice covering much of the planet. Who wants that!
It was only 10,000 years ago when a mile of ice was atop Buffalo, NY
‘Antarctic Poster Child of Global Warming is Getting Colder’
There simply isn't enough definitive weather data to create accurate computer programs. Not to mention bias on the part of the programmers. It's the old story: garbage in, garbage out.
UNLESS,
the polar arctic is dumping all its frigid cold and leaving itself open to warming.....That's got to be it!
As a side note, when I got up this morning (S.E. Michigan), the temperature was 51 degrees and raining. Right now (3:53 p.m.) it has dropped to 18 degrees...I've never seen such an extreme swing in temps in my entire life here.......
With that being said, sooner or later the Arctic is going to run out of cold since it's dumping all of it southward.........Maybe I should move north.
Got yah beat. -40 F to +40 F in about 10 hours. The winters in the late 80’s were nasty.

Shoveling out the driveway must have been a real bear.
Yup. “Cold” is not a thing. It’s the presence of less warmth.

Gee...I thought the science was settled...
