What the reducing the SALT deduction means for your wallet
NY Post ^ | Dec 16, 2017 | Jonathon Trugman

With all the horse trading over the tax plan, the politicians and the president’s advisers are missing a key economic point.

Most politicians and economists talk profusely about the so-called “middle-class,” but the fact is, in America, where states are free to tax whatever they can get away with, your ZIP code may be far more determinant of your economic level than your salary.

That point is completely lost on pretty much everybody writing the tax code. You see, what’s middle class in Topeka isn’t middle class in Queens or Hoboken.

If the tax bill passes with the low SALT (state and local taxes) deduction of just $10,000, the economy may have a real slowdown.

Let’s look at a typical NYC-area family. The wife is a lawyer; her spouse, an associate TV producer. Together they make $190,000 — that’s good money, for sure, but they live in an expensive area for work.

“ALL states depend on these deductions to get people into property ownership.”

B.S. The property tax deduction is not even taken by the majority of people who pay property taxes. Because even among most who pay property taxes a majority do not itemize deductions and in the lower tax states the $10,000 limit will be above property taxes most pay.

Both those state receive less money from the federal government than their taxpayers send to DC
*************
I think you’re just counting income taxes... I pay thousands a year in fuel taxes ,,, NY/NJ fuel is mafia controlled ,, so even though they pay road tax on SOME of it I am paying for New Yawkahs to ride the subway at a 80% subsidy courtesy of me...

Sorry, even if it were true - and I can’t imagine anyone not itemizing if they have a mortgage and property unless they live in a holler in West Virginia and their 6th great grand daddy patented the land in 1815 - it still doesn’t refute my points.

We are NOT leaving California simply to “punish” the Mexican parasite population and the white Leftists for their tax games. If you think that’s something we voted for and that somehow a piddling tax decrease for people who barely pay taxes at all will convince them to keep voting for Ryan and McConnell and their clones, you just don’t know the rat mentality.

Here are two political outcomes that will happen:

1. The remaining Republicans in the “blue” states will disappear. I mean, why bother? What that means is: the House majority disappears. Like that? Think that’s a good thing?

2. If the $10K limit is such a good thing, then why not raise it? Say, right back to infinity - all taxes are deductible! Which is what we have now. Can’t have it both ways. It’s either good or bad on principle.

Your arguments are Left wing redistributionist, and so are the arguments for this bill. It’s the same “give us yo’ money, we izz poah” crap we’ve heard since the New Deal started. When this goes through, you can expect the big donations from Texas and Florida - states with no income tax - to dry up. Why? Because their property taxes are relatively high - gotta get the cash somewhere, doncha know? If it ain’t income tax, it’s property and sales tax. User fees only go so far and are hard to collect.

Note also that there isn’t a lot of Rat objections to all this. Because when the other side is busy making a mistake, you don’t want to get in the way.

“I also feel sorry for people in low SALT states who subsidize the high SALT states thanks to favorable deductions”

The logic of zero sum communists who believe the government owns all the wealth/money and just lets us use a portion of it.

There is no subsidy. Nobody in state A is sending money to State B through tax deductions.

Only dumb people believe in that fairy tale, or espouse it for some political objective.

Simply ludicrous.

“All my life I’ve been subsidizing NY and Cali”

Only in your delusional imagination.

You never sent a single red cent to either of those states. Not one.

Ever.

“we HATE subsidizing high tax (blue) states “

You are exposing your abject ignorance.

You never sent a dime to any blue state.

Ever.

“Those States need to strongly voice their needs for lower SALTs to their State governments.”

Those voters need to unelect the Republicans that raised their taxes.

Not only is that rational, it’s moral.

“a lawyer and a TV producer aren’t middle class anywhere in America!”

Middle class, even to Democrats as little as 4 years ago was defined as income between $75k and $250k/yr.

Perhaps you’d like to claim to be a conservative, but dumb that level down to nothing above $100k?

“on one hand they contribute more but on the other hand they end up having their taxes subsidized by a larger pool of folks in ,lower COL areas”

Surely you realize that statement makes no sense at all.

“I happen to think that’s not fair.”

You certainly have every opportunity to move to one of these areas.

If you can afford it.

As for you “subsidy”, you are delusional. You never, not once, sent a single red cent to any of these high tax states.

“Much of the tax money sent by NY, CA, or NJ to Washington DC comes from Corporations who are headquartered NY, CA, or NJ, but do business in the other 47 states.”

Less than 10%.

Try again.

“That’s not on the GOP. “

That’s not what he’ll remember in the voting booth.

It was the Congressional Republicans that made the change that increased his net taxes.

And he’ll remember that for the rest of his life.

“I suggest you quit complaining and vote with your feet as your vote means diddly squat in your blue state.”

That confirms that in addition to being generally obnoxious, you are stupid too.

There are 34 House Republicans from CA, NY, NJ and IL alone. And there is only a 24+ seat majority.

Additionally, there are 14 Republican House members in CA, more than MOST Red states.

According to most, middle class is about $45K to $140K.

I am not directing this at any poster specifically just to the “people” in general.

I am so tired of this debate. They have us fighting over tax and income envy. They win. I pay more no you pay more no I subsidized your state no we subsidized you. You all took the divide and conquer hook line and sinker so now the politicians will add another 20K + lines/laws to the tax code screwing us all. The government (federal, state and local) wastes so much money buying their own fortunes, power and control. Yet here we are complaining over this tax bill.

Wow. This is why I know our republic is doomed. We can’t have a serious look or talk about the SS and Medicare and Medicaid and disability and welfare ... scam without people going I want my scam before we can even discuss fixing it. Pathetic. Everyone wants to ride in the wagon screw who pulls it.

We are all on the hook for 20 trillion federal and God only knows how much state and consumer debt. We have sold our kids, grand kids and great great grandkids .... off into tax slavery for debt and the un discussed un funded liabilities.

But everyone bitch and moan who is getting screwed more - guess what it’s everyone and it won’t change ever! Wake up!

You never sent a dime to any blue state.

NO amount of money could compensate for the damage blue states have done to the rest of the nation.

Yeah. We know.

Out here in California we used to be Reagan country.

But the upper midwest and the Solid South used to keep voting for Rats who resisted all attempts to close the borders. And kept expanding legal immigration from the entire Third World.

Now we live in a deep blue Third World disaster state courtesy of the votes of people in the Michigan upper peninsula who have no idea what it’s like dealing with the Orks of Mexico piling into our cities by the millions (no exaggeration).

Now that the rot is finally reaching them they see what we were upset about. But it’s too late. California is now a Mexican state.

You want us to vote with our feet and leave it to them? If my ancestors had bought that there wouldn’t be an America.

I lived in CA, saw the insanity and voted with my feet like so many other business people. Best thing I ever did.
