Chicken Wing Spot Prices Collapse 30% As NFL Protests Take Their Toll
Truth In Our Time ^ | 12-14-2017

Back in November, shortly after Trump ignited a war with the NFL over player protests of the National Anthem, Papa John's insisted that their sales were getting crushed by a backlash from fans who decided to boycott games (we covered it here: Papa John's Pulls NFL Ads Due To "Negative Consumer Sentiment"). That said, the complaint from Papa John's was seemingly discredited as a convenient excuse for poor earnings the very next day when Pizza Hut said they had seen no impact from the NFL protests. Of course, with all of the noise of seasonality, weather and random accounting games played by CFO's, it's almost impossible to know if, or by how much, declining NFL viewership actually impacted Papa John's earnings...any conclusions would be ambiguous at best. That said, what doesn't seem to be all that ambiguous, and probably should lend some credence to the original claims from Papa John's, is the startling collapse in chicken wings prices that coincided perfectly with Trump's first NFL protest tweets back in September. According to the Bloomberg data below, wing prices started dropping almost immediately after Trump's first tweets and have fallen a staggering 30% since.

Meanwhile, the collapse in wing prices was at least partially blamed for the abysmal earnings posted by one of the largest poultry producers, Sanderson Farms, earlier this this morning. Asked for their profit outlook for 2018, SAFM management, whose stock tumbled 12% on the day, seemed to be somewhat optimistic aside from crushing traffic declines at wing restaurants which they said are being attributed to the NFL protests.

ESPN Bosses Warn Employees About Biased Social Media Posts, Claim Network is not About Politics

“ESPN is a journalistic organization – not a political organization. We should do nothing to undermine that position,” Merida said. “ESPN’s focus is sports. By-and-large we are not experts on politics, healthcare policies, terrorism, commerce – that’s not what we do."

“Our audience is not looking for our opinions on the general news of the day,” Merida added. “And believe me, I get it. It can sometimes be difficult to control impulses or ignore trolls, but that’s what we’re called to do for each other.”

Sorry ESPN, but when push comes to shove, you’ll back the BLM crowd well before any conservative, veteran, or patriot.

Many chickens on the East Coast are thankful for the drop in wing prices.

Chicken wings are overpriced.

No kidding! I was in Costco the other day, and wings were 55 cents a pound MORE than chicken THIGHS!

“Our audience is not looking for our opinions on the general news of the day,”

Okay, then keep politics the hell out of the NFL and I might consider watching it again.

Hope the price is reflected in the grocery store by New Year’s day bowl games.

a. Good! Anything that HURTS the NFL and those down the Food Chain is fine with me.

b. Wings? I’ve NEVER understood the obsession. Drummies? Maybe. But seriously, BOTH are the dumbest snacks to ever be foisted upon us. Ever.

c. Great Marketing, though; I DO admire that! Find a TINY scrap of meat and make it a go-to food for sports gatherings? Brilliant, actually. ;)

d. So, how did your Granddaddy make his fortune, Sweetheart? He convinced people that a tiny scrap of meat off of a chicken wing was something they could NOT live without!

e. *SMIRK* Wish I was that smart!

Back in November, shortly after Trump ignited a war with the NFL over player protests of the National Anthem,

Not exactly...

The 'war' between the NFL and us Fans was ignited by Colin Kaepernick, his fellow protestors and their ESPN/MSM sycophants.

President Trump just articulated the anger of the Fans who were being ignored by ESPN/MSN.

Good. Wing prices here have gone over a dollar a wing. Anything that. Rings them down is fine by me.

I also could never understand the obsession with chicken wings and I don’t like chicken drums either. Since I don’t go to many gatherings where wings are served, I was pleasantly surprised when someone brought boneless wings to a club potluck. They were mostly gone by the time I got to them, but the two I had actually resulted in enough meat to chew. :-)

The truth will eventually out ... i.e. no, no, it’s not the NFL protests causing football related businesses to have less business ..... oh, chicken wings are now down? Ruh roh!! LOL!
