What I Learned about writing from watching Hallmark Christmas movies
Poynter News ^ | December 13, 2017 | Roy Peter Clark

For more than a year, I served as official caregiver to my wife of 46 years, Karen Clark.

Two years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two surgeries followed, along with three months of chemotherapy, and 37 radiation treatments.

It has been a life-changing experience, of course, and I am happy to report that all her doctors express great optimism about her prospects.

As a caregiver, I can testify that four powerful forces combined to help both of us through our struggle:

Medical science

Prayer and magical thinking

Comfort food (mashed potatoes and tapioca pudding)

Hallmark Christmas movies

I can't for the life of me understand how anyone could watch hours and hours of these movies. I'm one and done.

They are full of traditional Americana. There are no flaming gay people bashing conservatives. There is no bleeping out f-bombs, for that matter there is no foul language.

The women or the kids in the shows are not always smarter than the guys. Minorities are represented in proportion to the real population. There is always a traditional family unit involved in the story although there is an unfortunate coincidence in the recent death of a key loved one in the plot line.

Other than that, mainstream TV has it all over the Hallmark Channel.

I love the Hallmark movies! It is something the whole family can sit and watch and there is not much you can say that about any more.

In addition, the men are strong and manly, several stories celebrate our Military (try finding that on mainstream tv!), and the couples are in love before they ever even kiss. They actually know one another! What a concept!

Their other movies generally have the same positive emphases. We also enjoy the Janette Oke movies —kind of westerns with a Christian theme.

While Die Hard and most Willis movies are my absolute faves, esp Armageddon, I actually like watching Jesus of Nazareth. There needs to be a sequel though. I have it in my head already but by the time I get it written it’ll already have happened.

It’s a lot like the Die Hard movies. :) No one gets left behind, only killed or made a slave, but they overcome!

“My idea of a classic Christmas movie is “Die Hard”.”

It ain’t Christmas until I see Hans Gruber fall from the Nakatomi Tower!!

Apparently this person is missing some of the Christmas movies on Hallmark.

There is the "foster children" movie.

And the "ill or dying child" movie.

They are all sweet, touching and have happy endings.

I like the Hallmark Christmas movies too. I play tennis here in Reno with Norm Stephens. Norm produces some of the Hallmark movies, and recently produced the Mistletoe Inn for this Christmas season.

Yes, I love the Janette Oke books and movies!

From what I have read, Hallmark TV actually has its origins in Christian TV, so their focus is not too surprising.

I just find it so pleasantly refreshing to be able to turn on TV and not have my beliefs and values assaulted :)

And I wish they’d take that Alicia Witt and deep-six her from any future works. She’s just dreadful. (Was cute on “Cybil” years ago, though.)

“They’re all the same.”

Right. There’s a formula. Like those Harlequin novels that used to be popular. There actually WAS a formula to write them. Such-and-such had to happen on or before page #_. Crisis had to occur on or before page #_. You could do a search-and-replace to change names, places, etc.

Hallmark movies are the Hallmark of family movies....😀. Their Christmas stories movie are wonderful. A few nights ago, they had a movie about a couple who was divorcing, but their kids planned to send them to a resort for a second honeymoon. Wonderful acting and nice scenery...

We had on Lou Dobbs for a while last night & could feel his frustration re Mueller. Then we went back to Hallmark & watched it all night. It’s a pleasant escape.
