Republican Civil War Could Hand Senate to Democrats
Townhall.com ^ | Dec 14, 2017 | Scott Rasmussen

With Doug Jones' victory in Alabama, Democrats now have at least a plausible path to winning control of the U.S. Senate in the 2018 elections. It's a difficult path to be sure, but it could happen.

The first step will be for Democrats to successfully defend all of their Senate incumbents next November. That's not going to be easy because the list includes 10 running in states that voted for Donald Trump. But, the results from Alabama suggest that it could happen. If it does, all Democrats would need to win the Senate is to pick up a pair of GOP seats. And they definitely have a chance to do so in Arizona and Nevada.

The Alabama results indicate that Democrats might be positioned for a very strong midterm election. Especially notable was the strong African-American turnout that lifted Jones to victory. If minority voters remain engaged at similar levels next November, Republicans will have an enormous challenge on their hands.

Not only that, many Republicans chose to stay home rather than vote for Moore. If Republican turnout is depressed and minority turnout is up, the Democrats could win both Houses of Congress. And, if that wasn't enough, nearly half of college educated white women in Alabama showed up and cast a vote for the Democrat.

If the same trends continue in 2018, it will be a nightmare election for the GOP.

While some would like to write off the stunning upset in Alabama to a flawed candidate who ran a terrible campaign, the Moore candidacy was really just the symptom of a much deeper problem: Republican voters have little trust or confidence in the Republican establishment.

It's hard to blame them. After all, the establishment spent seven years collecting votes on a promise to repeal Obamacare. Voters gave the GOP control of Congress and the White House only to learn that the elected politicians didn't really mean it. For many, that wasn't really a surprise. It simply confirmed what they had seen before. Politicians are good at making promises but not so good on delivering.

Since GOP voters have come to see little value in sending traditional Republicans to Washington, they have become more and more attracted to people who will fight the status quo. Occasionally, that leads to a quality Senator like Mike Lee from Utah. More often, however, it leads to candidates like Roy Moore, Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock who lose elections that Republicans should win.

Establishment leaders are correct to point out that a more careful vetting process and thoughtful candidate selection would lead to more Republican victories. But that doesn't mean they are blameless in the party's Civil War. Quite the opposite, in fact; a health leadership would seek out quality candidates who can truly represent their voters, run a successful campaign, and then deliver on their promises.

Until the Republican leaders can change their tune and earn the trust of their voters, the party's Civil War will continue. That will lead to losing other elections they should win, and quite possibly to the Democratic control of the United States Senate.

There are plenty of Senate Republicans and NeverTrumpers who don't see that as a bad thing. It's a lot easier to be in the minority and pretend you want change than to be in the majority and actually have to deliver it.

Alabama is a trend?

The leadership is corrupt. There will never be any trust.

McConnell knocked out Mo Brooks in the primary, so Strange could run against Moore. If Brooks ran against the RAT (I can’t even remember his name), he would be senator today.

Yess we know that’s their intent. One of the reasons Trump is in office and that he’s not losing any popularity. And he isn’t

Republicans who are actually democrats are being illuminated

But they’ll lose the senate as sure as they can find victims for hire or use whatever tactic they can

Come on, the RINO leaders in the Senate want to hand the democrats the majority so they can go back to making all sorts of symbolic moves they know are doomed to fail before they even begin. Look at how they were happy to send Obama a "clean" repeal of Obamacare over and over but when Trump is President? Can't do it. Nothin' but BS from them.

Stupid.

As for the dems gain in a majority....pfttt!!!
They have 193 to our 239.

They would need to flip 46 seats and one of the 3 current vacancies.

Mathematically improbable.

It would be conceivable if the economy were in peril.

It’s not and won’t be for another 3 years, maybe.
That’s listening to a guy I know, who is the chief economist for a major, major investment firm.
He hates Trump...period but, his outlook and advice have the economy buzzing for a few years yet and even he hedges his long term outlook with the possibility that Trump will come through with tax reform and then he sees advantage USA for a variety of reasons.

So, middle finger to the prognosticators.

Oh, and about Alabama. They have blown a few hundred million this year to get one win.
That cuts into their funds for next year.
Bad news. DNC is literally so broke they can’t pay attention, have zero cash on hand and millions in debt.

RNC meanwhile has a ton of loot stashed, nearly $100 million, as does NRSCC and others.

They have cash on hand and the best part? Zero debt.

Trump, for his part, has raised a gazillion bucks as well for 2020.

If you’re blue and don’t know where to go...putin on the ritz

I believe many if the establishment types miss the days of minority status, especially along the lines of the 60-40 disadvantage during the first two Obama years. All that was required was to show up, complain about the horrendous legislation foisted upon this country by the dems, posture for the cameras, attend cocktail parties and play golf. McConnell wistfully recalls those “good old days.” They aren’t leader material; they’re collaborators.

The GOP wants to hand the Senate to the Dems, because they want Trump convicted in impeachment as much as the Dems do. Maybe more, because all they live to do is fund-raise and when you control everything and still never do anything of note, it’s hard to ask for money.

Mitch-Paul are not up to the task of leading or legislating. Only opposition to first Obama and now Trump.

They would have a sweet release if the Dems took over the senate.

Bye-bye judges, bye bye supreme court justices, bye bye wall, hello Obamacare, hello higher taxes, hello open borders.

Mitch has always been OK with being the Bob Michel of the Senate, completely ineffectual, but all the perks of “Leadership.”

The only strategy for the Demoncrats from now on is to play dirtier than ever. They have got a new card to play that’s better than the race card. The sex allegation card is hard to beat. Boy,what a bunch of hipacrits.

GOPe senate PAC money should have been behind Mo Brooks. Mitch put the money behind Strang which was a horrible decision.

Could hand the Senate to Democrats??

What the hell are they smoking so early in the morning? The Republican Leadership Wants to give the Demonrats control of the Senate. The only way for both Parties to survive is to band together and Do everything they can to Stop Trump and Screw the American People. it is their only chance of survival.

If Republicans now have 239 seats, they only need to lose 22 to be in the minority (217 out of 435).

The Republican leadership may think it is in their interest to lose control at least of the Senate, if not both houses, in order to hamstring Trump as much as possible, hoping that will cause him to lose in 2020.

Of course that would mean the next chance for a Republican President would be 2024, or maybe 2028, or maybe never.
