SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) California is moving closer to charging drivers for every mile they drive.
The state says it needs more money for road repairs, and the gas tax just isnt bringing in enough revenue.
The state recently road-tested a mileage monitoring plan.
The California Road Charge Pilot Program is billed as a way for the state to move from its longstanding pump tax to a system where drivers pay based on their mileage.
But its not just a question about money, its also a question about fairness.
State Senator Scott Wiener and others are saying that when it comes to road taxes, its time to start looking at charging you by the mile rather than by the gallon.
If you own an older vehicle that is fueled by gas, youre paying gas tax to maintain the roads. Someone who has an electric vehicle or a dramatically more fuel efficient vehicle is paying much less than you are. But they are still using the roads, Wiener said.
People are going to use less and less gas in the long run, according to Wiener.
And less gas means less gas tax, and less money for road repair.
We want to make sure that all cars are paying to maintain the roads, Wiener said.
One idea would be installing devices that would clock your mileage every time you pull up to the pump or electric car charging station. Or put a tracker on every car.
The reality is that if you have a smartphone your data of where you are traveling is already in existence, Wiener said.
None of this is sitting well with drivers such as Joshua Li, the owner of a hybrid BMW.
Li said he saves around $200 a month by not using gas

Because NEVER ENOUGH CASH.
Wrath of Tesla paired with greedy bureaucrats and intrusive social engineers.
There is always plenty for illegals and trains to nowhere.
Just like ancient Rome did. What’s old is new again.
So the .12 cents a gallon gas tax wasn’t enough for the thieves running California. Who didn’t see that coming.
And then taxes on taxes.
its about more money so we can pay govt workers and their private business partners tons more in wages and benefits....
arses....I will not visit Cali ever if this passes...
and now that the feds might be removing all deductions, we can't even work out a plan to deduct all these gas taxes as work related....
this is ultimately not fair for those of us who have to actually go into our job sites and work....(but I'm not in Cali)
Electric cars are costing the state in gas taxes! Oh, no! But we’re making sure the earth will be a nice place to live a thousand years from now.
Which makes me wonder does the pope believe Jesus will ever return?
What about if you drive out of state? I recently put over 1000 miles on the car driving in other states. Are they going to charge me for those 1000 Mike’s which didn’t happen on California roads?
It sounds like this should only apply to electric and hybrids. Regular folks are still paying the gas tax.
Tax your sanctuary cities, counties and state out of each and every bit of their livelihoods!
After all, its your money not theirs and you know better how to use it than the mere unwashed peon workers!
If they do this, I will put a proposition on the Ballot to make it a FELONY Punishable by 20 years in Prison for ANY Public Employee that uses a Taxpayer Owned or Funded Vehicle for any reason not strictly work related, including driving back and forth to work from home.
Ever since the idea about electric cars came about, people have talked about the need for creative ways to ensure they pay their share for the roads. They can’t just charge exorbitant tab fees on them because nobody would buy them.
I wonder what it means for people from Washington, Nevada and Oregon who drive in California.
When we moved from Texas to LA back in 1994 my wife went to get car license and she was given the choice of having a smog device on her car or paying a fee. The local behind her was pissed! He didn’t get a choice. And I guess that’s the first time he realized it wasn’t about smog. It was all about money.
This pope would prefer to have Che return.
Li said he saves around $200 a month by not using gas...?
And the state knows it and wants it!!!
This could be used to not only tally up how many kilometers in total you have travelled since last filling your tank - it could also be used to determine your destinations, your driving habits, etc.

Fortunately, I have a snappy come-back: "What's this 'smartphone' you keep talking about?"

Note how individual privacy doesn’t even register a passing thought to these totalitarian thugs.
Since the revenue problem is caused by electric, hybrid, and high MPG cars, only drivers of those cars should pay by the mile.
