And as Jane Fonda prepares to turn 80, she herself has admitted that even she thought she would have 'taken up gardening' rather than going 'back to the barricades'.

The veteran actress, who has spent more than five decades campaigning for various causes, said she is 'utterly terrified' to think that 'our freedoms, our democracy would be in jeopardy the way they are now'.

The two-time Oscar winner told Vanity Fair: 'I thought that we would have a woman president [by my 80th birthday].'
