The so-called Thomas Fire is only 15 percent contained, now threatening the city of Santa Barbara and the nearby coastal town of Carpinteria, and is on track to become one of the worst wildfires in California history.
It has already destroyed 583 structures and scorched 173,000 acres, the authorities say. New evacuations were ordered in Carpinteria, which been under fire threat for days.
The new evacuation zone extends within two miles of the Santa Barbara Zoo.

Dry they are - the high desert IS dryer. Hot? Not always. It is season and in the winter they are cooler or downright cold compared to the valleys south of the mountains, that don’t get as cold in the winter as the high deserts north of the mountains. Persistent? Short term they are less steady than they are very gusty with great variation in the gusts. The may “persist” for some days, but I would not describe them as persistent, as they can come and go, even during a single day, as they do during any season.

Yes, as I said, southern California is semi-arid (>9 but <20 inches of rain a year).

Saying no or limited federal tax dollars isn’t the same thing as everyone should die. It’s sad that even conservatives think of not getting tax dollars as equating to a death sentence.
It just means California should stand on its own 2 feet. Besides, it has billions and billions of dollars for all the illegals it harbors, it should take care of its own citizens as well.
Will the fires affect the marijuana “industry” or the California regulation schemes against real property rights in other states?
It a poster writes that no one should get federal disaster relief, that’s one thing, but I doubt the poster meant that. I’m sure flood relief for Texans would be just fine. I guess you missed all the posts about how posters don’t give a damn about Californians losing their homes, or how great it would be if North Korea nuked LA or San Francisco. It’s that bad.

For scale and comparison, the Santa Rosa fires destroyed over 8,900 structures! As big and bad as the Santa Paula area fires are, they are nothing compared to what happened in Santa Rosa.

I’ve lived in the desert for 54 years. Most of it in the high desert and central valley of California. Two years ago we escaped makes it funnier for East Tennessee. And I couldn’t be happier with the four seasons. They are spectacular! I was a little worried about the humidity, but the temperatures aren’t so extreme here that it is unbearable. In fact, the summers are quite pleasant compared to the Central Valley. Now, winters are a little more interesting. We just had a frosting of snow and some pretty cold temperatures. But I think it was worth the move still. The first thing people asked when I moved was how did I vote and where did I go to church. Those would be for bidden in the PC world of California. After first being taken aback, after I answered “correctly“ I was welcomed with open arms. It’s a different world in many respects. But mainly, it is like being back in the United States finally. I encourage everyone I can to make the transition. I am very glad to not be supporting a fascist state government any longer.
I guess I did miss those. There’s a lot of good people in California, there’s a lot of red counties inland. I’ve lived in Kern county for over 20 years. And my son and family is still there.
I hate to see misplaced anger like that. It just makes us all look like we are on DU.
You see very thin skinned Liberal and maybe Mojave like; dry.
Every thread about California brings out the haters - in numbers.
I’m in NorCal. We need a good NorCal / SoCal fight! It would take the sting out of all those across the land who hate all Californians.
Well, thanks to an insane legislature and governor, all of California is now a sanctuary state, so Santa Barbara surprising bit of sanity has now been overridden.

I heard that originally just after the big Northridge quake. The 10 Freeway collapsed at La Cienega Boulevard.
It took almost year to rebuild, Had to drive surface streets daily to and from the office during that time. It’s hard to get around in LA without freeways.
Well, since you live in California, you know ... it’s become very much a two-tiered society: the haves and have-nots.
And it’s gotten worse now that property values have skyrocketed.
I hate California politics and liberals there are damaging to my way of life, but, death? No. I can easily separate my ire over wrongheaded thinking from the seriousness of ending life. I also know that there are rightheaded thinkers in CA too. Some are related to me. Please stay safe and God be with all, including the first responders.
