Arizona man gave gun to daughter, 14, told her to kill herself, officials say

An Arizona dad was so fed up with his 14-year-old daughter's disciplinary issues he handed the girl a gun Sunday and told her to pull the trigger, police said.

Ulys Laffette Bell IV, 38, of Fort Mohave, gave the 9mm handgun to his daughter Sunday and instructed her to commit suicide, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said.

The teenager reported the incident Monday to school officials who informed police, 3 News Las Vegas reported.

Bell admitted to authorities he had disciplinary issues with his daughter and gave her a gun to shoot herself with, officials said. He told police the gun was not loaded at the time of the incident.

Sue Callahan, the sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said officials couldn't confirm the gun was unloaded at the time of the alleged incident.

Bell was jailed on suspicion of disorderly conduct with a weapon, child abuse and endangerment.

It was not immediately known whether Bell had an attorney.

When I was a boy Grandpa would hand us sharp pencils and tell us to stick them in our eyes. We didn’t, though.

Lighten up, Francis.

It’s an old Bill Cosby comedy line, from back when he was still funny.

He was stupid enough to do it but doubly stupid to admit anything to the cops.

I am willing to bet that he is a Democrat. Only a liberal can reach that level of stupid. If we could ban Democrats from owning guns it would eliminate 99% of gun crimes.

Plus if he had supported Trump then it would have been included in the headline: "Arizona Trump Supporter gave gun to daughter ..."

Teen daughters in their selfish insanity can live so inside your head that you can’t think of any non-harmful options to deal with them.

Been there.

Having said that, the key is to get away and do a spiritual re-set, then re-engage peacefully. The girl herself believes that she is dumb and ugly, so being cruel in any way simply cements it in her frail heart. This dad lost his perspective, his daughter and his freedom.

Let me quote a Chris Rock comment about O.J. murdering his wife.. .."now. . I'm not saying he should have killed the b**ch. . I'm just sayin. . . .I understand."

I am a father who has raised 3 daughters through their teen years and, whereas, I would have never done what this guy did. . .but. . .well. .(see Chris Rock quote)

You had pencils? And they were sharp???

When I was a boy we had to poke our eyes with sticks that we found on the ground and we were glad for them!

I am convinced that the teenage years are an evolutionary trait designed to make parents want their kids to leave the nest.

Not necessarily. She probably threatened suicide, so he gave her an unloaded gun. Now had he provided her with a loaded gun I might be more inclined to agree with you. Not the avenue I would take, nor obviously you, but sometimes parents do stupid things too. But if they work then perhaps they were right in following that avenue.

I can remember threatening suicide once when I was younger and my parents just said well go ahead & do it. Realizing that threat was useless it was never employed again. 8>)

What? You had ground to prance around on? We were too poor to have ground or be allowed on ground where I grew up; we had to float around tied to balloons.

You had string to be tied to your balloons? You had it easy. We had to hold onto the balloons on our own ...

Remember when we used to float over the lake boys? Back in those days we were too poor to have bathrooms.

No mention of mom so I’m assuming divorced.
If so mom could be causing problems for dad, telling the daughter “he can’t tell you what to wear, what you can’t do” and this is the result. Dad has had His fill, hands the brat an unloaded pistol and calls her bluff.

Grandparents can also be troublemakers. The old “well if you lived with us.....” routine works wonders stirring up imaginative, hormonaly unbalanced kids.

I have had first hand experience with both of those scenarios. I know the damage it can cause.
