It's easy for martial artists to talk about self-defense for most of us. Most of us probably don't struggle with physical challenges throughout the day. But what about senior citizens? I have taught self-defense to people in their late 60s and 70s. They were actually quite mobile and had the strength to hit the focus mits hard. (I remember one student was a 73-year-old retired physical education teacher. She was in great shape, had an awesome attitude, and man could she knock the stuffings out of the kick shield!)
However, in many cases, our elderly citizens struggle daily with loss of hearing, fading eyesight, arthritis, balance issues, and general lack of strength. Yes, I know there are exceptions like the amazing Helio Gracie (founder of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) who was still practicing his art well into his 90s:

hahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahaha. Coffee. Out. Nose.
fading eyesight, arthritis, balance issues, and general lack of strength
that is me to a tee....but tonight I will walk miles with my tree dogs...carry a 20 gauge single shot and a 709 in pocket...and very gamey ladner blackmouth curs. We do lay down in the woods sometimes at night and sleep for a bit. that’s what old folks do...hehehe
Dont pick a fight with an old man, if he is too old to fight, hell just kill you.

I carry every day, walk with a metal cane. The cane to gain an advantage up close, the pocket pistol to keep them at a distance. Yes, I have drawn it.
Good post. I have a good two-shot defense system that is nearly foolproof. The High Standard .22 magnum derringer. Will shoot through clothing and will absolutely tear someone up inside. No jams, no catching on clothing. Bad, nasty, horrible little gun that hurts you REAL bad before killing you. :)

Always wondered where that quote came from.
“I teach self defense to many senior citizens ... including my 84 year old mother...”
You’re a treasure and special for your community. Thanks for what you do, clamper1797.
I live alone since my wife died many years ago.
I am probably a bit of a nut on self defense. I am now propped up in bed as I write this next to my computer.
Within easy reach are two Browning Hi-Powers fully loaded. One with 16 rouonds (Mec-Gar mags) of Remington Golden Sabres. The other with 16 rounds of old Winchester Silvertips. Two spare mags, one a Browning make and one 30 round Argentine. both loaded with fmjs.
Within two steps are an off brand sword but it has an extremely strong blade as I have really tested it. An Ontario machete. A Winchester Defender loaded with 7 rounds of 00 buck, (it probably would not matter what load but the buck is certainly good).
Within two and a half steps are a Cold Steel spear, a Fiskars axe, a Fiskars, hatchet. Also an old all steel carpenters hatchet which would be an awful thing to be hit with.
Also within easy reach is an old Remington model 552 Speedmaster .22LR. It would be one of the last guns I would reach for but actually about as good as anything. It has never failed me.
In the next room are a whole lot more weapons.
Good lord,you certainly are prepared.
I’m a senior lady, sold my house, and bought a condo in a secure building. Approximately 25% of the residents are seniors.
I don’t go out at night and only answer the phone if I know who is calling.
The rest is in God’s hands.

I live in a rural area. My next door neighbor is a half mile away. Oops, I have one closer but he is through the woods.
Then you are a very wise man-——I’d be terrified-——I am NOT a country girl.:-)
.
You didnt mention where you had your claymore mine clackers!
I am afraid of mines.
My Father was in the combat engineers in WWII and they had to find and remove mines. They once dug 18 anti tank and bouncing Betty mines out of a 6 yard square piece of ground.
I forgot two Cold Steel short shovels. They are sturdy and sharpened on the edges as well as the point.
I have read that Russian Spetznaz love them for close quarters fighting.
The one weapon I have which gives me the shivers is that old carpenters hatchet. It has a wide thin blade which takes an edge really well and would be just plain brutal.
The most effective would be the short barrel shotgun or one of the Browning’s.
Wife will stick to her 9MM - ran exhaustive drills to make her aware of her chances against any male, and of the fake security of a 20 foot “buffer” if the gun ain’t out and ready to sing.
Well done article. As I approach 70, and am a small woman, short 5 ft, it’s not easy to fight off anyone bigger. But my 38 will bring you down. If that doesn’t work, there is always the 12 Guage with a pistol grip.
Some 1 ought to develop hearing aids you can wear to bed. I keep night lights on in all the main rooms, including our bedroom.
What bothers me most is those signs saying I can’t carry...unless it’s government property I usually ignore them. Most are up in DOCTOR/Hospitals, I use Amazon for most shopping any more.
Steinbeck...
Good to know.
We have a small mobile alarm system named Coco. No sound gets past her. Plenty of warning to grab the guns. :-)
