Exclusive: Pentagon evaluating U.S. West Coast missile defense sites - officials

Mike Stone

SIMI VALLEY, Calif (Reuters) - The U.S. agency tasked with protecting the country from missile attacks is scouting the West Coast for places to deploy new anti-missile defenses, two Congressmen said on Saturday, as North Korea’s missile tests raise concerns about how the United States would defend itself from an attack.

West Coast defenses would likely include Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missiles, similar to those deployed in South Korea to protect against a potential North Korean attack.

The accelerated pace of North Korea’s ballistic missile testing program in 2017 and the likelihood the North Korean military could hit the U.S. mainland with a nuclear payload in the next few years has raised the pressure on the United States government to build-up missile defenses.

On Wednesday, North Korea tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can fly over 13,000 km (8,080 miles), placing Washington within target range, South Korea said on Friday.

Congressman Mike Rogers, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee and chairs the Strategic Forces Subcommittee which oversees missile defense, said the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), was aiming to install extra defenses at West Coast sites. The funding for the system does not appear in the 2018 defense budget plan indicating potential deployment is further off.

Cheaper to just get rid of the NORKS and be done with it.

You can figure to protect Alaska, the west coast, and Hawaii...they will have to spend in the neighborhood of five to eight billion dollars, and at least half-a-billion yearly to maintain the ‘defense’.

I tend to agree with you....just take out Kim, and the problem is over.

But there will always be another Kim. As long as there are missiles, we’ll need missile defense.

Seems like a return to the days when every town in the country had a Nike missile base.

No reason whatsoever to protect Mexifornia
Place the missiles so as that the intercept refuse falls on SF.

Eliminates libs and Google. Double dividend.

Don’t worry, the libs will refuse for whatever liberal reason to allow any defensive missile sites in California anyway.

Denial of existential threats to their lives are not seen by them, whereas the imaginary threats like Global Warming, are all they see.

From another thread: Obamacare’s individual mandate cost the US govt an estimated $340 billion over ten years.

I think we can afford to build those additional missile sites since it would appear that we are settling into a deterrence strategy.

With Kalifornia threatening to secede from the union, led by its commie governor, why pour billions of the rest of us tax payers money into it? The Nevada and Idaho are only a few hundred miles east, why not put the anti-missile sites there? Forget Washington and Oregon, they are only a step behind Kalifornia in their desire to secede.

That is a big clue as to the nature of the deficits in thinking abilities of liberals. I see a lot of evidence that their brains are simply not wired correctly, but I still cannot figure out the root defect. I like to understand how people think, what motivates them, and so forth, and my inability to figure out the root cause of liberal cognitive dissonance is very frustrating.

It is psychological and social and is spread by our education system and reinforced by our media, and entertainment industry. Liberalism is a conditioned response as predictable as Pavlov’s dog.

On a personal level, and i experienced this until I recognized it, liberalism is the essence of the politics of peer pressure. Group think of the left is reinforced by positive social benefits in the form of approval and acceptance into the popular culture.

Kim’s son is like less than five years old...so I don’t see this replacement Kim existing at this point. Unless his sister steps forward, or some unknown cousin exists...the Kim line of command would come to an end.

By “another Kim”, I mean another dangerous megalomaniac getting in charge somewhere or another, not just NK. It seems inevitable that people like that will arise, and we need to be able to defend against them.
