The micro-quake occurred about 1.7 miles northeast of the Punggye-ri nuclear site in the country's northeastern province of North Hamgyong, the Korea Meteorological Administration said on its website.
"The quake is a natural one and it is believed to have occurred in the aftermath of the sixth nuclear test", it said.
Minor tremors have been detected at the site since the North carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test underground in September, damaging geological structures in the area.
An official of the Korea Meteorological Administration said: "Kilju is a rocky area where natural earthquakes normally do not occur.
However, the quake could have been caused by geological changes created from the recent nuclear explosion.
Local reports claim it is one of at least four tremors that have been felt in the area since a hydrogen bomb test on September 3.
North Korea's nuclear test site may be suffering from the geological condition "Tired Mountain Syndrome" following the latest atomic blast, but it is unlikely to be abandoned, according to the respected 38 North website.
The quake occurred at 7.45am local time.

I have a bad feeling these really are not ‘earthquakes.’

My favorite part was when the Japanese guy was holding the eggs in his hands as they hatched.

“I have a bad feeling these really are not earthquakes.”
There have been press reports that actually the Norks nuclear testing has destabilized the area and there are reported incidences where it is thought that major collapses have occurred.
My question is why we are not doing to NK what the Israelis’ are doing in countries that threaten them? Israel takes immediate action to protect itself, why don’t we?
Just asking.
Tokyo earthquake in 1923. Devastating. Didn’t stop them from going into Manchuria in 1931.
I think Phat-Boi broke something. Naughty, naughty....
Maybe it’s really an earthquake caused by something else. Any ideas?
“Tokyo earthquake in 1923. Devastating. Didnt stop them from going into Manchuria in 1931.”
Just how is that relevant in this discussion? The collapse of NK’s nuclear test site would have a significant bearing on the continuation in the near term, of their nuclear weapons testing. I think Rocket Man would welcome an earthquake that only killed off a few million of his unfortunate citizens. Fewer mouths to feed.
Or maybe Donald Trump as some guys there setting off some big giant bombs to destroy some big giant missiles.
the earth is going to open up its mouth and swallow up that evil place and the people with it.
Nope.
