Mom With MS Finds Nasty Note After Parking In Handicapped Spot
By Shannon Antinori, Patch National Staff | Nov 15, 2017 Updated Nov 15, 2017
"You need to think twice before judging someone," the Plainfield mom said. " You have no idea what they've been through." By Shannon Antinori, Patch National Staff | Nov 15, 2017 2:22 pm ET | Updated Nov 15, 2017 11:50 pm ET
PLAINFIELD, IL From all outward appearances, Michele Clarke, 39, looks young and healthy. But 16 years ago, the Plainfield mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Since then she has had to battle back from flare-ups that have at times left her using a cane or a wheelchair, and even hospitalized for weeks at a time.
"Then there's times when I'm able to go to the gym and build up my strength," she told Patch.
Like many who suffer from "invisible diseases," Clarke said that for many years she was hesitant about using the handicapped placard for fear of being judged.
"It almost gets to the point where I'm afraid to use it," she said, "just because I'm not in a walker or I'm not using a cane ... I may look good on the outside, but on the inside I'm struggling."
Her fears came true on Monday, Clarke said, when she took her 12-year-old daughter to a doctor's office on 127th Street in Plainfield. As she was getting into the car, her daughter handed her a note that had been left on the passenger side windshield.

Do people make assumptions on visuals, all the time. Do some people stroke their self righteousness by leaving judgmental notes, hell yeah!
Before I was disabled I often made those same assumptions, not , anymore, now I know I have some better days were it's hard to tell when I first get out of the car.
Bottom line sometimes people are jerks, does that warrant a media event? Someones being an attention whore.
Correct. It was a shameful and cowardly act and hopefully the person who did it now feels some remorse for being such an idiot.
How does she hear emergency vehicles? How is her depth perception? How is her periphieral vision? If all is well, so be it.
Would you disqualify a Veteran with similar disabilities, I assume?
Is that a question or an assumption?
To all you self righteous every one’s a fake people: I will think of you all every time I use my parking permit. And may you enjoy your body while it still can get you around without people making judgements about you. And may your body deteriorate very quickly so you can enjoy my quality of life. Best regards.
I gave toe amputations on both feet and a heart condition but you can’t tell by looking at me.
Whoops. I have toe amputations on both feet and a heart condition but you cant tell by looking at me.
Mrs. JimRed has an arthritic knee and back plus vision problems, and has the handicap parking tag. When I drive her somewhere I drop her off at the shortest walking distance to the entrance and park wherever or take a handicap spot. A few times when I’ve had to return to the car without her to retrieve something I’ve gotten the “what’s HE doing in that space” look from some individuals. Never an actual challenge though. Guess I look too formidable! < /sarc >
More like "How can I circumvent the law" types!
No, something is perfectly normal here.
My wife got notes like this when she needed hip replacements at thirty eight. And people would give her crap for using electric shopping carts.
A lot of Americans lack the intelligence to comprehend or the compassion to consider that bad things sometimes happen before old age.
A lot of things are rare and when you read about them you know it will turn out to be a hoax. This isn’t one of them. In fact, this is so common I am surprised it saw print.
My knees are shot....I use the carts when i go to Wal-mart and such. I’m sure some people look and think the same of me. Things aren’t always what they seem.
OK you’re an idiot. Fortunately, you’re not in charge of anything. Farewell.
I use the normal parking spots, and never use the carts, even though I am in perfect health.
OK youre an idiot.
Folks, please, lets lay off the insults
Interesting that you cant handle a simple conversation without resorting to name calling.
It's perfectly valid to ask if handicaps should disqualify ANYONE from driving.
OK I will try one more time, “Mr.Unique”.
I do not talk to idiots. Any further posts from you I will ignore.
Good bye.
Pussy
“In our state, theyre good for a few years, then have to be reapplied for..”
What state is that? As far as I know it is a federal law and every state has to comply.
Backed in so no one could see you didn’t have a handicapped plate, eh???
