While CO2 concentrations are now higher than they have been in at least 800,000 years, the gas still only accounts for a tiny 0.04% of our atmosphere.
However, extracting carbon dioxide from well mixed air is not just technically difficult, it's expensive as well.
A half-hour outside Zurich stands one of the frontline attempts to develop a commercial approach to sucking down CO2.
On the roof of a large recycling centre at Hinwil stand 18 metal fans, stacked on top of each, each about the size of a large domestic washing machine.
These fans suck in the surrounding air and chemically coated filters inside absorb the CO2. They become saturated in a few hours so, using the waste heat from the recycling facility, the filters are heated up to 100C and very pure carbon dioxide gas is then collected.
This installation, called a direct-air capture system, has been developed by a Swiss company called Climewanks.
It can capture about 900 tonnes of CO2 every year. It is then pumped to a large greenhouse a few hundred metres away, where it helps grow bigger vegetables.

We are all going to die of oxygen starvation if they keep going this way. All oxygen comes from CO2 (discounting what the submarine guys breath). I am sure they are also hurting old growth trees. Now where is that liberal tree hugger that is screaming and crying at the same time about old growth trees, etc.
This is RACIST. Some selected plants get extra CO while others are deprived. The poor free range plants are deprived because of the RACIST 1% who use up more then their “fair share”.
PETV (People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetation) need to get going on this.
While CO2 concentrations are now higher than they have been in at least 800,000 years, the gas still only accounts for a tiny 0.04% of our atmosphere.Yeah, weird, huh? Based on proxy data, the CO2 level has risen by 100 parts per million since about 1850 -- according to the AGW demagogues, more than enough to cause the atmosphere and the ocean depths to behave in ways contrary to the laws of thermodynamics.
Does anyone see how stupid this is? Its using energy to provide a richer mix of Co2 for a select few plants. Duh.
The CO2 that you have removed formerly went to ALL the plants on Earth. You are concentrating it and giving it now to a very small number of plants. You are cutting back on the CO2 available to the the vast mass of plants on the surface of earth, and so fewer plants will grow and the CO2 will increase to the level where it was before you started your stupid machine.
Your damn Co2 is going to leak out of your damn greenhouse eventually, and go into the atmosphere anyway.
Big waste of energy for nothing.
What a$$holes.
And apparently no one sees the problem with this. All they are doing is temporarily capturing CO2 at great, unnecessary expense.

They never seem to tell the whole story in these articles. Draw a bubble around the whole process and tell us how much energy is going in (electricity, natural gas, etc.), how much CO2 is collected, how much of the collected CO2 goes into larger vegetables versus going back into the atmosphere? How much does this system cost, and what are the economic benefits?
I’m guessing the whole story would be pretty pathetic.
I have always thought that, _IF_ the day ever comes when we realize that CO2 really is a horrific thing, then ultimately its Technology that will come to the rescue.
I'll say.
