I recently had an experience that made me realize just how little is correct about political correctness and how warped, impractical and downright silly the ramifications of it are.
I was doing an interview publicizing an all-day, multi-act, outdoor music show we were a part of in Cary, North Carolina that was called Carolina Uprising.
The reporter, a young lady, seemingly extremely naive, asked me about the shows name, Carolina Uprising, to which I responded, What about it?
She responded that it sounded like something concerning the Civil War.
Obviously, she was looking for a loose thread of racism or prejudice to pull on, but since there is none here to pull, I went on to explain to the young lady that it was a musical show, not a white supremacists meeting or gathering of far right extremists.
I dont know what she wrote, but she was definitely trying to get me to walk through her political correct minefield. I refused.

The way this Yankee sees it...
There’s an awful lot of Rednecks and Hillbillies buried at Arlington, laid to rest under Old Glory.
That makes either appellation honorable enough for me... I’d be proud to be called either one.
They’re all Americans, and therefor they’re my People.
Sgt. York of WW1 fame, from the mountains of Tennessee, was a hilbilly. Audie Murphy of WW2 fame, from East Texas, was a redneck. Two of our greatest war heroes, both southerners.
Whether they were buried at Arlington, I don’t think they were.
Awesome! Thank you!
The label redneck was placed on citizens who bent over while they worked in the sun. Their necks got sunburned. Rednecks built this nation. Rednecks keep it going.
Thanks.
I got that this morning in an email. I was glad to find a place it fit so well.
You are most welcome.
Heck, you can watch "The Andy Griffith Show" or "The Beverly Hillbillies" multiple times daily.
Being comedies, they are not really meant for ridicule and propaganda, just entertainment. Andy Griffith really was from North Carolina, and it was his show.
You could toss Green Acres and Petticoat Junction in there as well as all the ‘Mayberry’ spinoffs.
Since the 70’s Hollywood has done their damndest to show ‘flyover country’ as populated with Deliverance types and anyone who ventures outside the city limits is in mortal danger..................
From Wikipedia:
Murphy died in a plane crash in Virginia in 1971 shortly before his 46th birthday, and was interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
Sergeant York is not buried at Arlington according to Wiki...
Says Charlie:
And for all you people who have and will call me a hillbilly and a redneck, I have two words:
THANK YOU!!!
Says me:
Me too!!!
I descend from hardworking dirt farmers who all sported red necks at one time or the other... Not so sure I can claim hillbilly since they were not mountain folks...
I do not consider the terms an insult and would much rather qualify for them before being called a metro-sexual or New Yarker......
I’ve done work for Charlie and sat in his office just talking about things which had nothing to do with the work I was doing. He’s a genuine guy and a smart man. Kind and courteous in every way.
I always heard that red necks started showing up when farmers stopped wearing wide-brimmed hats that shade the back of your neck. I don’t know when the “ball cap” became the thing to wear, but I think it would be better to have some protection back there.
If push comes to shove, I'm not really a hillbilly although I live in hills of Knoxville (such as they are), but if you want to call me a redneck hillbilly (or vice-versa), I will accept the compliment.
Cross a hillbilly, you may have to squeal like a pig. Cross a redneck, they wont find your body.
Most West Virginians consider hillbilly to be a derogatory term. Of course you can call me a hillbilly if you want, but if I don’t like you I suggest you don’t.
True enough, for both York and Murphy.
But there’s many, many more who weren’t York nor Murphy that are buried there.
Our people. Our ancestors. Our family.
People who use “hillbilly” or “redneck” as a slur against our folk are too stupid to realize that it’s an honor to be called that.
It’s good to be despised by the despicable... means we’re over the target.
