A year and a half after a petition circulated calling for Yale to decolonize the English department, the first students are enrolled in a new course created by the department to increase the breadth of the curriculum and combat claims of departmental racism.
Whats more, new requirements are in place to ensure a more diversified slate of courses.
Previous requirements for the major included two courses in Major English Poets, including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Donne, Milton and Eliot, among others. But that two-course series petitioners had deemed actively harmful due to its focus on white male poets. The series is no longer a graduation requirement for Yales English majors.

I effing knew it!
Jokes are now real.
A lot of people born in this country, with roots going back over 200 years, do not seem to speak their own native language very well. I think that destroying the English Dept will not fix this.
Participation trophies now for minority poets to increase diversity........ridiculous. ‘Good’ in any endeavor doesn’t matter anymore.
The dog barks in the night.
I wonder “Do he bite?”
Kill my landlord. Kill my landlord.
Only works written in ebonics, rap, or ghetto speak now allowed?
Remember the big deal over “It takes a village?” Go back to the 17th century and John Donne says “no man is an island.”
Glad we have nothing to learn from the best expressions of the language that ever existed. Besides he triggered when he said ‘man.’
Hell,I can speak from personal experience of being irreparably harmed by being exposed to "Much Ado About Nothing".
You be racist or what,nigga?
Gonna have to add “Great Poets of Colour” like maybe 2 Chainz, Akon, B.G., Beanie Sigel, Big Lurch, and a host of others that have been put in jail.......That’ll ensure that the education is well rounded (by including the “rounded up” with the true greats....
‘Besides, he triggered when he said ‘man’.
Yes. Judging historical literature by the mores of today. An exercise in degradation of the culture. SMH
I thought English Departments at universities/colleges did this decades ago with Black Studies, Hispanic Studies, Women’s Studies, Asian Studies, Native American Studies, etc.
Removing classic authors further diminishes the value of such degrees.
The term “English department” is racist. </sarcasm>
In reality, those books are too difficult for them to comprehend.
The home-schooled kids are gonna absolutely crush these kids, in the game of life.

How many non-white, non-male writers of note are there in the English language, especially prior to the 20th century? There are a handful of notable female writers, but they're white too.
I guess that instead of reading Shakespeare or Milton, the students will now focus on such culturally worthy topics as the graffiti of Chicano gang members and rap lyrics.
It means universities will search for sub-par “authors of color,” particularly 3rd world ones, to replace the classic texts of the English language.
They are already far along in this process.
You say this as if the goal for "decolonizing" the English department is to help people speak their own language. It's not.
