The conference of national defense chiefs is on countering violent extremism.
Since being appointed armed forces chief by President Joko Widodo in July 2015, Nurmantyo has been at the center of several controversies.
Earlier this year he abruptly suspended all military cooperation with Australia in a row over teaching materials, and has been rebuked by members of Widodo's cabinet for making misleading public remarks.
He helped stoke a wave of anti-communist sentiment sweeping Indonesia by ordering the screening of an anti-communist propaganda film to members of the military
Nurmantyo will step down as leader of the armed forces in 2018 and many analysts believe he has political ambitions.

Any chance that he’s a moslem?
Not a chance ... he’s Amish
if he is anti-communist he can’t be all bad. Could this be the action of a holdover Obama disciple?
Probably. Something like 90% of all Indonesians are.
Probably some hold over Obama fellow travelers in the State dept gumming up the works...
Tillerson needs to clean house..
Based on what little I just read about the General, he seems like a stand up guy...
How bad can an anti communist be ?
Don’t know if this is related.
From Wikipedia:
Nurmantyo joined other government officials as well as social activists in a march to support religious tolerance during the Jakarta November 2016 protests. Alongside Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Indonesian National Police Tito Karnavian and Islamic activist Yenny Wahid, he led public support of interfaith unity as a counterbalance to earlier protests against Jakarta’s Christian ethnic-Chinese governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama which included elements of intolerance and Sinophobia.[2][3]
It’s a bit tough, to understand that paragraph completely.
One of the best examples of double talk ever.
Obama’s shadow government, our own deep state, is still doing Obama’s bidding, without any direct orders needed because they are simply so like minded, so in tune with Obama-thought.
I’m thinking there is concern that another Sukarno or Suharno is emerging. The US supported the military strongmen during the Cold War, doesn’t want to be seen doing the same thing again. This guy’s support of ethnic Chinese Indonesians may have less to do with their Christian religion and more to do with their ethnic background.
