Man arrested after cops mistook doughnut glaze for meth gets $37,500 from Orlando

TThe City of Orlando paid $37,500 to a man to settle a lawsuit after police officers arrested him for what they thought was meth but was actually tiny flakes of glaze from a Krispy Kreme doughnut.

Daniel Rushing sued the city after a field test incorrectly showed he had drugs and he was arrested and taken to jail.

Perhaps... and yet if the PD got sufficient shame out of this, it might also serve to reduce the number of such incidents.

Who is responsible for choosing and quality controlling these tests? The onus devolves right back upon the police either way.

And this is assuming that the test wasn’t purposely tainted.

I’ve eaten a lot of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. To be fair, they ARE kinda addicting.....

Kinda!?.......KINDA!?

That's like saying a nuclear weapon can make a slightly loud bang! :-)

“Orlando could have used a good drug-sniffing K9. A well-trained Belgian Malanois wouldn’t have made such a stupid mistake”.

My Mom’s dog would’ve known immediately.

Hint: His name is Dunkin.

Course, then there wouldn’t be any ‘evidence’ left lying around to test.

Happy he got a nice settlement to make him hole again.

I hope they still have the free dozen glazed with any dozen purchased. Fill out that receipt online if they have it.

They were afraid he was fried by the glaze in his eyes -— err, on his mouth.

They probably feel kinda frosted, now.

They knead better training.

I had my run in with a female cop who though she was tough and ballsy and in reality just a bullying bitch.

Long story, Lakeland, FL PD. Last cop who ever steps on to my property uninvited without a warrant. One instance where I will always hold a grudge.

I was a leader of our hazmat team. We had some very advanced very expensive testing equipment. We also had test kits that didn’t require a lot of hardware. But a kit or machine was only as good as the person operating it. We often drilled with the police. My observation was that the vast majority of the police were not worth crap when it came to identifying chemicals.

Orlando could have used a good drug-sniffing K9. A well-trained Belgian Malanois wouldn’t have made such a stupid mistake.

I had just returned to base from one of my missile alerts and I had just got back to my barracks room. It was about noon, I was tired and hungry, so I was at my desk making a ham and cheese sandwich when the LEs came into the dorm with the drug dog. My room door was open and as they walked by the dog went nuts and they told him to find "it." The dog came right over to me and put his head on my leg and looked up with begging eyes.

The dog's handler saw the packages of ham and cheese on my desk, smiled, shook his head and pulled the dog out of my room.

I warned them about problems with using "Old Diabetes" as their canine unit. He'll alert on anything edible and the only time he found drugs was a bag of pot brownies.
