Hollywood's Masculinity Deficit

Actress Emma Thompson says the Harvey Weinstein scandal is part of a "crisis in extreme masculinity." Not the way I see it. I think Hollywood is suffering from an excess of feminism and nowhere near enough masculinity.

Just to be clear, the Weinstein phenomenon is not caused by any one thing. Unless I miss my guess, there will always be Harvey Weinsteins. Hollywood in particular is a town full of powerful men and attractive, insecure young women desperate to salve their insecurities by winning the love of millions onscreen. Put powerful men and pretty, insecure, desperate women together and you'll get abuses. And by the way, this trick works with gay people too. Remember when Corey Feldman spoke out about widespread homosexual predation on young actors? I do. Remember the thorough investigation that followed, resulting in exposure, scandal and arrests? Neither do I.

But powerful men and masculine men are not the same thing. Former Fox News host Laura Sivan recently told in heart-wrenching detail how Weinstein cornered her in a basement and masturbated in front of her. Is that how manly men behave in your book? Pick your masculine icon. John Wayne's characters? Clint Eastwood's? Watch me take a shower. Give me a massage and I'll put you in a movie. Is that how they behave?

Some of today’s casting directors are women. Some are gay men.

It’s not hard to figure out why so many modern stars are beta males. The folks in Hollywood have a “type”.

Femmy pajama guys are all the rage these days. It’s the in thing. So hip. So cool. So now. Everyone thinks they have to jump into the rainbow parade.

That certainly wasn’t the fad back in my day. It was a very, very rare thing. When I was in high school in the 70s, our school was small but I don’t remember any. Well, I had suspicions later on about a couple of girls but that’s never been confirmed even with small town gossip. There was an elderly man down the street who was “femmy” but he didn’t flaunt it. There was a guy who ran the variety store, again no flaunting. And there was a younger kid down the street who’d dress up in his mama’s wig, fishnet hose and sparkly twirler outfits but that all changed when he hit puberty because he ended up marrying a woman and having kids. Today, the poor kid would have been put on hormones and had his thingie whacked off before puberty and never lived a NORMAL life.

There is a LOT of truth to this, although I don't know that they do it because they HAVE to. They do it because the predominant pop culture wants them weak and nobody ever taught them to be strong.

I think the Europeans were way ahead of us in their decay and decadence, which is why they are so unfathomably leftist now. The USA was a bit of an anomaly in our mixture of high-level technological progress and yet religious devotion. The societal decay we're seeing now in the US was already occurring in Europe a hundred years ago, and if we had just watched and learned from it we might have gone a different way. But perhaps it was the sturdiness of the American umbrella that kept the rotten houses of the European countries from collapsing earlier. Now we'll all go down together.
