McCain could give the same thumbs-down to a tax overhaul as he did to health care

It’s a specter that should stalk the nightmares of Republican leaders: a Senate chamber, packed on Christmas Eve, as lawmakers gather to decide the fate of a tax package that will shape the GOP’s political fortunes. The bill remains one vote shy, and then Sen. John McCain walks in, pauses before the desk, and delivers his second thumbs-down dagger of the year.

For that reason, the Arizona Republican, who is fighting a public battle with brain cancer, will be among his party’s most closely watched as the year winds down and the tax debate gears up. Yet over his decades in public life, McCain has traced a zigzagging line on the subject, leaving little clear indication of how he’ll approach a potentially decisive vote. A look at the senator's record on taxes shows that three things seem most important to him: public debate, some help for the middle class, and not exploding the deficit.

I heard from someone Dems will not get onboard until they know the GOP already has the votes to pass it so don't look for them to help TRUMP out

“Last ninety days, a person would typically be on some serious medications/pain killers and probably only be capable of a couple hours a day of activity. My guess is that by Christmas, you won’t see McCain around,”

I just laid to rest one of my HS friends @ 77. He was diagnosed in September of last year, had every available treatment including surgery. He was in Hospice care by February, and he died in mid June. Cancer cells multiply very rapidly, and this cancer becomes debilitating quite rapidly in all but a very few cases.

He is a FPOS. He has been doing a disservice to his country for far too long. I used to respect him.

6-9 months is what my wife says.

Not fast enough. We need it to happen in 6-9 days or even better; 6-9 minutes.

If Alzheimer’s isn’t a compelling argument for term limits, I don’t know what is.

I honestly think Trump would be better off go after Joe Manchin of West Virginia who is up for reelection in 2018. Make him in offer he can’t refuse, some huge coal tax break to West Virginia and then wait for McCain to do his theatrical thumbs down, then have Manchin flip his vote and pass the bill, making McCain look like the feckless idiot he is.

McCain is blind with Trump hate.

That hate is doing more to keep him alive than any medical procedure his doctors can administer........

If true, it’s more proof that he’s a bitter old man, too consumed by hate to do the job he promised to do and was elected to do.

I think people should write McCain, thank him for his sacrifices and service, wish him well and pray for him, and tell him that he is risking the legacy of his lifetime of service by opposing everything that he said he was for and that the country elected Republicans to do.

I think people should send him maggots with a note that says "you'll taste like chicken", but that's just me.

McCain would be an interesting test case of whether a State Recall election can be used for a person elected to a federal office. Forget about the brain cancer, he’s serving himself; not the people of Arizona who put him in office.

A federal legislator has never been recalled in America’s history. Individual states never had the original sovereign authority to unilaterally change the terms and conditions of the service of federal officials agreed to in the Constitution.

Recall was considered and rejected when the Constitution was written.

There is a relevant SC decision, ‘US Term Limits Inc. v. Thornton’.

And he could have passed by then. He has a disease for which there is no cure. (What the doctor told my father a few weeks before my mother died of cancer.)
