Worker warned hotel before Las Vegas shooter opened fire on crowd

A maintenance worker said Wednesday he told hotel dispatchers to call police and report a gunman had opened fire with a rifle inside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino hotel before the shooter began firing from his high-rise suite into a crowd at a nearby musical performance.

The revised timeline has renewed questions about whether better communication might have allowed police to respond more quickly and take out the gunman before he committed the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Worker Stephen Schuck says he was checking out a report of a jammed fire door on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay when he heard gunshots and a hotel security guard, who had been shot in the leg, peeked out from an alcove and told him to take cover.

"As soon as I started to go to a door to my left the rounds started coming down the hallway," Schuck said. "I could feel them pass right behind my head.

"It was kind of relentless so I called over the radio what was going on," he said. "As soon as the shooting stopped we made our way down the hallway and took cover again and then the shooting started again."

What kind of fool shoots himself in the chest to commit suicide?

To me it is clear that he shot himself in the mouth - blood pool beneath head. The blood on his gut (pot belly) is stuff that blew out and down - he was probably sitting. (Blood spatters on his chin).

The position of the rifle with the bipod is a bit odd laying on his legs. He is sitting as if to cover the main door and the door to the adjoining room. However, the rifle is pointing towards the windows, and perhaps ten feet from the broken window.

It might make sense if he was left-handed. Note that the pen was to the left side of the note pad with his distance/elevation notes.

Normal procedure would be to contact the Security Control Room, which would immediately notify police of an active shooter on premises.

We did drills with simulated active shooters in lobby or on an occupied floor as a scenario, with the entire building staff taking part, as part of training.

We had two medium height high rise office buildings and attached parking structures. Bomb threats were also trained for.

We did it on a Saturday with very few people around. Hired an expert to come in and critique our performance.

We learned so much. This was in about 1994. Worth every penny for wages and consultant.

I want to know when did MGM Security Control notify LVPD, and what did they do when they arrived.

Our procedure was to greet police at main entrance and accompany them to site of incident, as they would not necessarily be familiar with the layout. Same with Fire Dept.

At MGM, elevators would have been used to get PD to 31st floor and they would climb one flight to 32nd floor to get eyes on and to engage.

I want to know what door alarm went off and why. I would think that the only doors that would be alarmed are the stairwell doors, as the stairwell doors must be kept closed in case of fire so stairwell smoke exhaust systems will work effectively.

You have some excellent thoughts and questions. Getting answers to them would go a long way to satisfy many concerns.

Was Paddock selling a BMW or was he buying a BMW from the guy? If you’re suicidal, you get rid of things, not buy more.

I read somewhere that 911/cops never were called by Mandalay. That’s probably why the hotel is hyper about the timeline. Lawsuits are in their future if they failed to call.

Paddock had a Hyundai, not exactly a high end vehicle. The other vehicle, maybe the girlfriend’s, was a Chrysler Pacifica I think. Not high-roller vehicles.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. You’re not blowing your brains out if you’re buying a new car.

I think NBC News Today show has the answer to the “when did Mandalay call 911” question.

Have you seen this? https://www.today.com/video/las-vegas-shooting-new-audio-captures-first-shots-fired-1069738563795

The maintenance man (Schuck) spoke to his superiors via radio. He told them to call the police when the shooter was firing at Jesus and Shuck. He literally dodged a bullet. He gave an “EXCLUSIVE” interview to NBC news that included the recording of his radio communications. LEO got wind of the story coming out and that is why they “updated” their timeline. MGM got tired of playing their game and saw the writing on the wall. Lawsuits were starting and they began their real PR campaign. They have had sufficient time to train/clean up their man (Schuck). Now both LEO and Mandalay/MGM are in CYA mode.

Thanks,azkathy, for the link.

Although we know when the maintenance guy notified Security that gunfire was occurring on the 32nd floor, we still do not have the exact time MGM Security notified LVPD and what they told them.

The LVPD were on the 32nd floor in 19 minutes from the time the maintenance man notified Security of the gunfire.

It would take another hour almost until SWAT breached the door.

From what we know now, there was no gunfire in between 10:19 am and the door breach.

You are right—everyone is playing close to vest like a bunch of gamblers, and we are still being left to speculate.

There is more to this story than what meets the eyes now.

The building has three wings and Paddock had a large suite at the end of the wing, the double door to his room was the end of the hallway. So, if he fired through the door those rounds would tend to travel down the hallway.

My question: Forget the maintainence guy. Why was the sucurity guard there? Was he sent first because someone had called frantically about the jambed door? What did the security guard do to prompt Paddock to fire through the door? Did Paddocks room connect (was adjoining) with the room with the jambed door and the security was requesting that Paddock allow the people to pass through?

It seems like Paddock, for whatever reason, saw the security guard as an immediate threat. Otherwise, why not wait it out and the security guard would likely leave. Then he could get on with it as planned. Why shoot someone in the hallway bringing immediate attention to your exact location sooner? Unless there was no choice at that point.

Or...did a guest notice the camera hidden in the food service cart by Paddock and tell the security guard (possibly in person) that there is a pervert on my floor. The security guard then goes to confront Paddock and Paddock panics.

My understanding (perhaps with a little speculation) ...

Both the security guard and the maintenance guy were responding to an electronic door alarm. The alarm was triggered when the door to the stairwell was left open for too long. The door was open because Paddock was monkeying with it to jam it to prevent ingress from law enforcement. Paddock freaked when the security guard showed up. It's not clear whether Paddock was still working on the stairwell door when the security guard arrived (security guard said he heard drilling that I'm wondering may be related to jamming the stairwell door) or if Paddock was in his room drilling his suite door shut when he heard the security guard outside of his room reporting what he found. Either way, Paddock ended up in his room and started shooting through the suite door.

The security guard reportedly found shelter in an "alcove". I'm wondering if that is the area between the double doors of the stairwell. The stairwell door was jammed preventing the security guard from using the stairwell as an escape. Eventually, the security guard noticed the maintenance guy walking down the hall, and shouted a warning. More shots were fired. During a pause, the security guard left his "alcove", ran down the hall, and found another place of safety.

Wow, I hadn’t heard that.

So, if he had somehow successfully barred that adjacent stairwell door, he would have forced the police/SWAT to funnel down the long hallway. His double door forms the end of that hallway on that wing of the building and he had cameras pointing down that hallway. He planned to ambush the police/SWAT.

Yep. That hallway would have been a 100 ft. long kill zone.

I wonder if anyone actually believes Paddock’s $ was from gambling. I doubt it any of the sources claim this believe it.

Las Vegas Security Guard Shot by Vegas Killer is Not Registered as a Security Guard in the State of Nevada?

by Jim Hoft

It’s being reported that the security guard made famous in the Las Vegas shooter story is not even registered as a guard with the State of Nevada. Is he even a guard? Why was he there?

Every security guard in the state of Nevada has to register as an armed or unarmed guard with the state’s Private Investigator’s Licensing Board (PILB). This entity’s records are publicly searchable at: nevadapilb.glsuite.us.

There’s no Jesus Campos licensed with the PILB.

The maintenance man (Schuck) spoke to his superiors via radio. He told them to call the police when the shooter was firing at Jesus and Shuck.

Yes he told them about the shooter, and told them to call police. The issue is did they call police right then? From scanner transcripts there is no mention of a call from hotel staff to police/911. The scanner transcript shows LVMPD were responding to reports of people being shot at the music venue. When LVMPD arrived they had no idea where shots were coming from, no idea where shooter was. From transcripts LVMPD figured out where shooter was- step by step.

The hotel staff knew which floor, which room the shooter was in because of the security guard and building engineer. The LVMPD did not know for some reason.

One thing that will be key here is finding out exactly when hotel staff called LVMPD/911.

I made the same assumption earlier, that staff called LVMPD/911 as soon as they were told on the radio that there was a shooter. From transcripts of LVMPD radio calls I no longer believe the staff called as soon as they were notified. I have not found any reference to hotel staff calling 911.
