Democrats Panicking Over Virginia, Show Signs of Post-Trump Stress Disorder
New York Magazine ^ | October 11, 2017 | by Ed Kilgore

The Virginia gubernatorial race concludes in just under four weeks. Democratic candidate and Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam has a lead of 6.8 percent over Republican Ed Gillespie in the RealClearPolitics polling averages. The last time Gillespie led in a public poll was in March.

So what’s up with all the “panic” and “worry” and premonitions of “disaster” for Democrats in Virginia, given all the positive objective indicators of the state of the race?

Democrats may be suffering from their own version of PTSD — Post-Trump Stress Disorder — in which pessimism operates as a natural defense mechanism to prevent the kind of shocked disappointment they experienced on the night of November 8, 2016.

Hopes of a quick recovery from the Trump madness were temporarily raised by Jon Ossoff’s special-election campaign in Georgia, which at one point looked like a certain win, but then that, too, turned out to be another bitter buzzkill.

So perhaps all the bad vibes Democrats are feeling about Virginia have less to do with the race itself than with the daily reality of waking up each morning and realizing that Donald Trump is president of the United States and apparently none of us will deserve good things for the foreseeable future.

Democrats who think that “enthusiasm” and self-confidence are tangible assets in politics should fervently hope that Gillespie doesn’t pull an upset on November 7. It might be enough to raise Post-Trump Stress Disorder to epidemic levels.

If Virginia didn’t go for Trump then I think it is a lost state. We always get our hopes up for Virginia and it fails us every time. I hope we get the GOP Governor but that Northern Virginia has so many people....Ugh.

Wonder if some of the good folks from ‘Ol Virginia jump in here. I realize Gillespie is not your first choice, nor mine either, but does he have a chance?

I haven't seen any reliable polling but my gut is that he has a chance. I was a Corey Stewart supporter and my initial reaction was screw Gillespie, he's the epitome of the GOPe. BUT Northam is a HUGE abortion supporter. In the early days of his campaign he ran commersials bragging about his support for woman's 'reproductive health' rights. So Gillespie gets my vote.

“Was VIRGINIA one of the states that cleaned up its voter list?”

Doubtful. Terry McAuliffe is Governor. If he said he “cleaned up” the voter rolls, you can bet he meant “f***ed up”.

“Was VIRGINIA one of the states that cleaned up its voter list?”

Hell no!

Virginia vote fraud is now one of the worst in the nation.

The democrats have effectively loaded the registration rolls with illegal aliens (mostly Hispanic from Latin America)and non-citizen legal aliens (green card south Asians).

McAuliffe has been very effective in blocking any reforms but he gets a lot of help from a RINO/GOPe legislature that won’t fight him or have the courage to speak out against the immigrant vote fraud lest the Washington Post write nasty stories about them.

Virginia was once a most solid red state.
Now it is blue and getting bluer.

Gillespie hasn’t helped, being a GOPe who just recently started to say he was no longer for amnesty and pandering to Hispanics like he was in his career as a GOP spokesman.

For Gillespie to win, the scum Northam has to caught doing a Harvey Weinstein in the next three weeks.

No more RINOs. There was a decent pro Trump candidate Corey Stewart in the primaries that would have smoked the Dem in the general but the NoVa Rinos would have none of it. So Gillespie the RINO can f off.

Um, when did Ossoff EVER look like a certain win????? Seriously, that race NEVER EVER looked like a certain win for the Dems, you had to ignore a whole lot of reality even on Ossoff’s best day to think it was a lock for him.

Very little excitement on both sides. Gillespie is a RINO and Ralph is not black so voter turnout will be low. This will be a toss up.

Although I don’t like Gillespie, I’ll take him over Ralph.

Gillespie isn’t my choice, but he’s who’s on the ballot there... the polling seems off to me, at least the RCP averages... I’m hard pressed to believe the dem is up 7 in VA.

NOVA is the democratic swamp, the rest of the state has to perform high and NOVA low for a typical “R” to win, and Gillespie is a typical R... he’s not likely to pull a Trump because it isn’t in him. Would have rather seen someone far more bold than establishment running here.

With that said, we shall see.... I will say this, if Hillary could only pull VA by 5, no way a governors race is going D by more than 5 unless there is some sort of extenuating circumstances.. Odds are probably in the D’s favor, unless Gillespie can somehow motivate the Trump base.. and I don’t know if he can... I’d expect all things being equal the D to win, but by less than 5 points, maybe 3-4... If Gillespie can somehow motivate the Trump Voters, he could probably pull off a win, but I don’t see that happening..

I am not on the ground in VA, so I could be completely wrong.

I am on the ground in VA and Northam has promised to take down civil war memorials in the state. There are still some old line Democrats in the state who are really p*ssed at this promise. We could have a surprise on election day.

Elections are decided by voters who vote.

In many jurisdictions..., elections are decided by those who COUNT the votes!

I don’t see too many signs for either candidate in peoples’ yards but you do see them along the major roads. I will vote for Ed because I haven’t missed an election for so much as dogcatcher in my life. And, yes, the Mariners Museum has some great lectures and events.

I was a Wagner supporter in the primary but I will vote for Ed while I hold my nose. Please reconsider not voting and turn out against Ralph?! Turnout will be key in what will be a low enthusiasm, off year election. The dems will crap themselves if they lose.
