The Utah police officer who was filmed forcibly arresting a nurse who refused to let officers take a blood sample from an unconscious patient has been fired, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.
A Salt Lake City Police spokesman told the AP that police chief Mike Brown decided to fire the officer on Tuesday after an investigation into the incident.
The officer, Detective Jeff Payne, was seen on film dragging a crying nurse out of the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City after she prevented law enforcement from taking blood from an unconscious patient.
The nurse, Alex Wubbels, told officers they needed a warrant, the patients consent or for police to arrest the patient in order to draw blood.
Payne told Wubbels he would leave with blood in vials or body in tow before placing her in handcuffs and dragging her out of the hospital.
The hospital banned law enforcement from interacting directly with nurses after the footage appeared.
Payne was also fired from his job as a paramedic.
Both the Salt Lake City mayor and police chief apologized for the incident.

He did NOT get what he diserved. He deserves to be arrested and convicted of assault.

If I was big and strong enough to kick his ass I’d go looking for him and you all would have to take a number and wait your turn. To the copper who dissed me weeks ago: just what do you have to say? Any mention of him doing time? He’s just not worth reading about.

A professional news report would also have included:
* mention of the department's disposition of the other officer who is said to have collaborated with Det. Payne
* mention of potential or pending criminal charges against Det. Payne.

He did NOT get what he diserved. He deserves to be arrested and convicted of assault. In addition, those officers who stood by watching the felonious assault in progress should have charges filed for aiding and abetting.

Had a friend where the sheriff did the same thing PLUS asked without permission his “consent” while under medication after an accident. My bud sued him and the department which eventually resulted in a cash settlement with him. One year later, he invites us a to a strip club and says “sky’s the limit”.

No, he deserved for this nurses father, husband or brother to get three free swings at him while he is tied to a pole. Then arrest and trial for what he started.

“This is just the start of his problems.”
Let us hope! Wubbels had a lawsuit ready to go when she released the videos. Now that this guy has lost both his jobs, he’s a “dry hole” when it comes to being sued for financial damages, so the only kind of a lawsuit that can be brought would be a criminal one, and that would necessitate the SLC DA filing charges. Cities operate like insurance companies, they rarely do anything that costs them money, unless they are forced. Maybe Wubbels should sue the City and the PD?
