3 in custody after assault-style rifle found in vehicle leaving O’Hare

Three people were taken into custody Saturday after a driver was pulled over as he left O’Hare International Airport and an assault-style rifle and handgun were found inside his vehicle.

A pressure cooker was also found during the traffic stop, which happened shortly after 8 a.m. as the vehicle exited O’Hare Airport, according to Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Neither the guns nor the pressure cooker were believed to have been intended for any acts of violence in the city, which will see enhanced security measures during the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, police said.

The vehicle was stopped after the driver was seen speeding by officers as it left O’Hare Airport, police said. A handgun was initially found inside, but a more thorough search also revealed an AR-15 rifle and the pressure cooker in the vehicle’s trunk.

Three people were taken into custody and the CPD Organized Crime Bureau and Joint Terrorism Task Force were called to conduct an investigation, police said.

Police said they don’t believe the pressure cooker was intended to be weaponized after finding food and grease remnants inside.

The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old man from Wisconsin, was being cooperative with officers and federal agents, police said. He said he was in Chicago to drop off a friend at the airport.

Police said they have concluded the man posed no threat to events in the city, but were working with prosecutors and seeking aggravated weapons charges in connection with the incident.

All three people remained in custody Saturday night, Guglielmi said.

Police added that while there was not believed to be a threat to events in the city connected to this case, runners and spectators at the Chicago Marathon should expect to see a “very visible presence” of police officers along the marathon’s route. The department has also increased the number of undercover officers working the marathon and will be coordinating with FBI agents, Homeland Security officials and Illinois State Police.

Patrols in and around Wrigley Field and Solider Field will also be increased for National League Division Series games and Monday’s Chicago Bears game against the Minnesota Vikings, police said.

Mohammad probably changed his name on his way up through Mexico and bought fake ID there, too.

No way to know for sure, unless we make folks carry their DNA fingerprint everywhere they go. Yikes!

In many states nothing described here is a crime.

Sometimes a pressure cooker is just a pressure cooker.

On the flip side, it’s possible those involved are from an ethnic group that tends to be more ‘splodey than others. Which seems likely given the complete lack of commentary on that.

He had an AR 15 and a pressure cooker. Now if he had 32 ounces of soda for which he paid no tax on... then we would have something here. /s

No where does it say the pistol was on his person or that the rifle was improperly secured in the vehicle.

Assault style must have bayonet or grenade launcher attached.

Otherwise it’s just a semi-auto rifle.

“Doesn’t everyone ride around with an AR15 and a pressure cooker in their trunk”

Not unusual at all in Wisconsin. Their mistake was being in criminalannoy.

It’s Chicago, so there must be some law about the AR15.

Cook county and Chicago. I believe state law may allow transportation through the city/County, but then he wasn't passing through, rather to a destination. Then there's his lack of an FOID, a state violation, felony for the handgun. He can argue he was passing through under federal law, but he clearly had a destination. Most Wisconsin gunowners know this.

And then there's the dirty pressure cooker.

“Wait, this has to be #FakeNews. Everyone knows there are VERY STRICT GUN laws in Chitcago”

Chicago cops are notorious for making up laws on the fly.Oh you will eventually skate but good luck on getting your guns back.

“They were carrying without a CC permit...If no permit. Should have had any firearms field dressed, locked in trunk, with any ammo locked separately away from firearms and in trunk.

Given the history with pressure cookers at marathons and fact that we just had a mass shooting, these people were either idiots, up to no good, or both.”

More like just naive as to how rotten illannoy is.

My understanding of Illinois law is that it must be either 1. not accessible, 2. disassembled, or 3. unloaded and cased.

Note the first words of your link, As long as you have a FOID* card, you can have your gun in your car.... Being a Wisconsin resident, he doesn't have one so he'd have to rely on the federal through state transportation exemption. Good luck with that. I'd go with #2 or #3 of your example. Not accessible is vague other than if locked in the trunk. And remember these things are a function of local police and prosecutor, and are defenses he'll raise at his own expense.

“I go into the Peoples Republic of Illinois as little as possible, but when I do I leave my firearms at home. I don’t have an Illinois FOID card, and I don’t want to find out the hard/expensive way that I needed one”

Very wise of you. But you dont need FOID as a non resident ...just keep in a case unloaded.Cops being cops there is no guarantee you won’t be hassled no matter what.

“The only possible crime here was that he had the handgun loaded and immediately accessible, which doesn’t fit the admittedly vague description of it having been found after a search.”

Doubt local law enforcement will look at it that way. Remember, he's not an Illinois resident thus has no FOID opening up a new array of charges, including felony charges for the handgun even if it was unloaded in the trunk. Heck, no handgun, no AR15, just handgun ammunition in the trunk could be a felony.

“In IL, you can CC with a CC permit. If they had a permit, they could have a loaded weapon in front seat...If they don’t, they should have followed local and state laws. Which I stated as locked, field stripped, with ammo locked separately in the trunk.”

illannoy has no reciprocity...treats everyone like shit equally.
