U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy announced Wednesday that he will not seek a ninth term in Washington as a marital scandal envelops him, including allegations that the married, pro-life Republican asked his mistress to get an abortion.
After discussions with my family and staff, I have come to the decision that I will not seek re-election to Congress at the end of my current term, Murphy, 65, of Upper St. Clair, said in a statement.
I plan to spend my remaining months in office continuing my work as the national leader on mental health care reform, as well as issues affecting working families in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Murphy added.
Murphy said in the brief statement that he planned to take personal time in the coming weeks to seek help as my family and I continue to work through our personal difficulties and seek healing.
Murphy admitted last month to having an extramarital affair with a friend. The affair became an issue in the ongoing divorce case of Murphy's mistress, Shannon Edwards, 33, and Jesse Sally, 36, both of Pittsburgh.

Yeah, once decent but squishy Republican. Happy to see another opportunity for a real conservative to get that seat.
I hope no one comes forward and says “but the dems are worse”. We’re serious about our moral and cultural values being a huge component of our vision to restore the US. Republicans who lie to get elected or don’t stick to their campaign values are WORSE than the dems. They stole a seat where the voters in good faith voted for Constitutional Conservative values. These hypocritical phonies are the reason the Deplorable agenda isn’t already law.
Well, bye schmuck.
As a side note I’d point out that Murphy’s party affiliation is mentioned in the first paragraph, while many articles about the Menendez trial don’t even mention that he’s a Democrat.
Geez ... We have a hot local going on here in Washington County ... is there anyone we can promote ?
I hope no one comes forward and says but the dems are worse.

Ditto, this is inexcusable,
These guys get comfortable in their offices and forget who they serve.
Agree 100%. Hit the road, jack.
Washington state? Thanks Vigilanteman.
I used to live in that district. I met him once about 9 years ago, and did not get a favorable impression of him then. I wonder who will run for his seat now?
Pro Life Congressman tells mistress to have an abortion... wow... just wow. Laws for thee, not for me!
Their is a fatal combination of the ego necessary to seek office and those attracted to power that multiply the temptations.
What really needs to happen is that out of the “political ashes” of the current GOP, there needs to be formed a new party that is framed on ethical, moral behavior. Committed to the values espoused by President Trump. Free of the money from the Chamber of Communists, Business Roundtable and other groups who have co-opted what was originally a decent political party and turned it into their private preserve. America needs to be permanently taken away from “America, Inc.”
He was my Congresscritter at one point, until they re-drew his district a few years ago.
Can’t say I had a lot of complaints about his voting record—I realized he was a RINO—but I always thought there was something inauthentic about his personality.
I actually met him on several occasions, as he did like to circulate around the community. Whenever there was a local Republican or even conservative event, he would usually turn up if he was in town. One of the places I encountered him was at a Sean Hannity book signing at Walmart, in the lawn and garden section!
Another was at my workplace (a large local company). The first time he showed up, it was shortly after a campaign appearance by GWB during the 2004 campaign. He had given a speech prior to the President. One of my Republican co-workers and I had been there, and when we saw Murphy in the cafeteria we went up to him and I said something complimentary about the speech he gave there.
He replied, “Yes, that was one of my best, wasn’t it?”
Sometimes the swamp is self-cleaning - only on the Republican side though...
Nicely stated
So what are they saying...a republican said one thing and did something else....I’m shocked...shocked...there is gambling in this establishment!!!
