After Alabama, GOP anti-establishment wing declares all-out war in 2018
The Washington Post (digital subscription) ^ | September 26 | Robert Costa

The stunning defeat of President Trump’s chosen Senate candidate in Alabama on Tuesday amounted to a political lightning strike — setting the stage for a worsening Republican civil war that could have profound effects on next year’s midterm elections and undermine Trump’s clout with his core voters.

It marked yet another humiliation for the Washington-based Republican establishment, particularly Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), whose allies pumped millions of dollars into the race to prop up Strange and reassure his colleagues that they could survive the Trump era.

“If you’re an incumbent, you have to assume the wind is against you,” said consultant Tom Ingram, a longtime Corker adviser. “If you do run, you take nothing for granted and leave nothing on the table. You start out with one big strike against you: You’re an incumbent Republican senator.”

I think that’s spot on. Just like letting the Dems think they’ll be involved in some decision making.

You are right, pfflier.

The Beltway thinks that Moore is freakish when in fact he exposes the Establishment’s freakishness.

He supports the 10 commandments. Opposing them is freakish.

He supports other decent things that only a freak would oppose.

Trump was exactly the same way — he exposed the freakish ‘open borders’ crowd and suckups to Islam.

Bull.

Trump originally got bad advice from God only knows where. Something changed his mind and he engaged in a slow pivot, culminating in a half-hearted speech in Huntsville.

Drop the 24-D chess mess. Trump often screws up then adjusts.

Yep - they don’t realize it is a win-win for trump. he didn’t throw Strange under the bus which would have been a political no-no and would have been a disaster if Strange won, but now he did “the right thing” and still got the best candidate.

The Moore win is a big fat indicator that the Conservative movement is not a “Trump Movement”

It is about being and choosing conservative candidates who will espouse a conservative message. When Trump does that we are with him, when he doesn’t we are not.

Trumpism defeated Trump
If Trump wont take down the GOPe then Trumpism will have to do it without him
-
Agreed, but this isn’t unusual for Trump - remember, he also supported Paul Ryan. I think he’s just trying to play politics, and was paying back The Turtle for bringing up the Obamacare repeal again. Trump than had integrity enough not to back out of his support once the latest Congressional effort failed.

undermine Trump’s clout with his core voters.

How could anyone draw that conclusion? I stopped reading right there. This is BS.

Trump made a political mistake in backing Strange. It's ok, a small mistake easily corrected and forgotten. All he need do is back Moore 100% and it's game on. No harm, nor fowl.

I agree, Trump only backed Strange because of some deal that’s been kept from us. I cannot imagine that he is unhappy with Moore.

LET the media think that Trump was defeated last night...it will be that much longer until they awake from their collective delusion.

And this time he’s opponent is not a squishy Republican. It’s much worse. His opponent is Doug Jones, an ultra-liberal zealot best known as one of the most liberal members of Bill Clinton’s Justice Department under Janet Reno. I cannot tell you how important your continued financial support will be. $$$ still important to keep UBER LIB CLINTON IDIOT OUT.

I like this arraignment.

An arraignment I would like even better would be that of Hillary. Follow it with justice for all of her many crimes, and things will be wonderful.

“Trump’s support for Strange was only for show.”

You are exactly right and everyone understood that was all it was. A few tepid tweets and a half hearted endorsement was all Trump did for him. He probably secretly wanted Moore.

I try to read some of the comments but the liberal commenters just make me sick.

Many of them are bots, paid for and deployed by the ilk of Soros and Clinton.

During the last election, bots--programmed to respond to certain keywords--made up to 60 or 80% of posts on various comment boards, most of them pro-Hillary. [I forget the actual percentage, but it was a stunningly high number.] Bots also posted pro-Trump comments, but at far lower numbers.

Those bots are the latest attempt to sway opinion through propaganda. I think that a lot of paid activists also post for the same purpose.

Those seeking to sway opinion through propaganda do not think that people are capable of reviewing facts and making up their own minds. To them, the battle is between which side has more persuasive propaganda.
