I’m saying nothing would happen to America if we preemptively nuked Pyongyang, it’s pretty obvious what I’m saying if you read what I’m replying to.

Thanks for saying this. Rocket man threatens our nation and it’s people every day and he’s welcome into NY with welcome arms? What am I missing here?

It is the Foreign Minister who is in New York, not Kim. In fact Kim’s location is never revealed, so as to avoid a decapitation strike.

I am in Ho Chi Minh City.

I have been impressed with it here. It is not Thailand, or Cambodia. If either of those places are your idea of where you most want to go to, you might consider going there. You might be bored here.

I don’t go to bars, myself. The bar scene here is sort of weird. The places I have been to are all places where groups of people get together and hang-out. There is a small amount of the western-oriented places in District 1 here, but otherwise it is much, much, much more low-key than in America or either of those places I mentioned.

In District 1 which is the big western tourism place, you will find lots of places which are more western, with many more clients who are from other countries.

This is much less oriented toward western guys. But there is quite a lot of pro-American sentiment here, surprisingly so, considering the history.

Let me give you my impressions:

It is very very crowded here. It is very very hot. There are two seasons basically: Hot and wet. And drier, but even hotter. There are lots and lots of motorcycles (all basically 125’s). There are lots of coffee shops. There are lots of couples, who hang around in the evenings. There are a lot of families on the 125’s riding around on the one bike. A mother and father, and one kid is quite common. A mother and father and two kids, is common. Everyone just piles on the one small cycle.

Traffic is absolutely chaotic, but in the city everyone is going relatively slowly, and there really aren’t a lot of accidents.

There are surprisingly few law enforcement officers around. Remarkably few. One thing however is you will see a lot of guys in front of places, who sort of look like cops. Those guys are just the people with establishments, and are not cops. A lot of them help to park and keep track of the bikes, everywhere. There are however groups of actual policmen which will stake out a corner somewhere (especially on the weekends) and I have been stopped a number of times, each time I ended up paying a small amount at the stop itself, and being let go.

That said, it is sort of a hassle to be 100% legal about having a motorcycle. So you really need to pay attention, especially since the traffic here is COMPLETELY without apparent rules.

People come from every direction, at any time, on any street. Go through lights. Dart out of corners. You really need to be 100% focused at all times, everywhere, 360 degrees.

The thing you won’t really see here is a person wearing a Walkman, outside. First off they will be often stolen (lawbreaking does not seem to be a problem here basically, at all, but that is one exception). And otherwise you just need to be 100% aware of everything around you, all of the time. Always.

I like it. But it is a big change from the US.

Trumps approval rating would plummet, he’d probably be impeached, people would be pissed, America would be on the receiving end of tough rhetoric for a few years and maybe some sanctions but ultimately the world would move on.

Nah, don't think so. Trump just announced to the whole world via his UN speech that the US will use nukes on North Korea.

Trump also told the world that the US has patience. Trump has patience.

Now the world is on notice that there will be a nuclear explosion or two on the North Korean Peninsula.

Kim will continue to bring the world to the brink. Trump will continue goading the UN to do something, and of course they will do nothing. And Kim will continue to threaten.

And after a little more of this, everyone in the world will breathe a huge sigh of relief when the American nukes finally totally destroy North Korea in a preemptive strike.

Of interest, I am too tired to hunt down links, but I heard a little bit of the South Korean President’s comments earlier today and he seemed fairly supportive of Trump’s speech at the UN.

I not only read it, but I'll post it to jog your memory.

If America is wiped off the map the world suffers and all the Russians and Chinese know it. North Korea, not so much.

Trumps approval rating would plummet, he’d probably be impeached, people would be pissed, America would be on the receiving end of tough rhetoric for a few years and maybe some sanctions but ultimately the world would move on.

The question once again, based on your own words.

All that would happen after America is wiped off the map?

I think at this point Trump needs to IMMEDIATELY draw boundaries (as in “The Art of the Deal”) and tell Kim:

-—— “If NK detonates an H-bomb in the Pacific, that constitutes Chemical Warfare because the US will immediately get a lot of radiation downwind. Such a Chemical Warfare attack on the US is EXACTLY the type of action that I meant when I said “if we are forced to defend ourselves or our allies, the US will destroy NK’.”

WE MUST DESTROY THEM.

Trump is not president of South Korea

I know that’s cold.

It is what it is.

Trump is trying to get a majority of both U.S. and world public opinion on his side, preparing for the eventual military showdown if it comes to that.

Even for a deal-making, showing he has means and will to carry out the threat is important. That does not mean that he should just forget it and move on if his opponents call his bluff. If they do, he should do what he promised.

FIRST, they are advancing too quickly to not have help.

It reminds me of that Star Trek episode where the Klingons and the Federation are arming and upgrading weapons to two groups.

Russia, China, Iran? ALL?

NK, the China islands, Putin can’t be trusted at all.

This is bad.

I CANT BELIEVE I saw some posts here only months ago saying “God bless Putin, he’s saving the west”

Yeah that’s what he’s doing

SECOND NK has to be destroyed.

Initially, it was mainly China and Iran to help N. Korea along technically and financially. I suspect Russia joined the game late and juiced up NK's rocket development and possibly what is believed to be a hydrogen bomb.

Maybe China did not expect to see NK's program advance so fast. Now that China is not the only one on the driver's seat, China may start to feel uncomfortable. China and Russia generally have shared strategic interests, but I am not sure they are 100% on the same page.

Agree completely.

I get to HCMC about once a year. Vietnam war vet friends ask me what Saigon is like now. My answer? It’s the same, but more so!

Remember, traffic lights are only suggestions.

Be well.

Oh my gosh you have zero reading comprehension and obviously didn’t read my reply, and cannot understand what “if” means and what “preemptive attack on Pyongyang” means.

seriously I’m done.

Meh - I wrote this earlier and forgot to post it. Up way too late, worried about non-FR stuff...

Why are we risking US blood and treasure in this far away peninsula when the south Koreans are perfectly capable of defending themselves?

Uh, do you understand what extortion is? No, I am NOT being condescending. Your question makes me ask.

Do you understand that North Korea's system, and Kim's power, are dependent on them blackmailing other countries?

Does trying to satisfy a serial blackmailer EVER work, in the long run?

Only time, at present, and perhaps a couple allies like Russia or Iran, are needed for North Korea to perfect ICBM's with nukes. Once it has those weapons, North Korea is only as far away as the flight time of an ICBM.

Do you understand why it is incredibly dangerous to have a whole lot of medium-to-large countries (economically speaking) armed to the teeth, especially if that means being nuclear capable? (How often do Allies of Convenience later turn into enemies, especially when there are not very long term cultural and economic ties of great significance and depth? Russia, China, Iran -- the list is long. In addition, in many parts of the world there are deep hatreds between cultures, hatreds that are kept mostly "covered" now, but one or more of those civil veneers will be ripped off in a large scale manner, sooner or later.)

How is South Korea supposed to defend itself against a nuclear armed North Korea, without US help?

While there have been a few bumps in the road, by and large, S. Korea has been a good U.S. ally. What would the ramifications be, moral, and strategic (don't forget the Chinese angle), of abandoning them?

Sooner or later, Kim will have the capability to back up a demand that the US pay tribute. (For all practical purposes, the Norks have already done this, using S. Korea and our own fear of war as hostages, in the Clinton years.) But, the US is us. The money actually comes from you and me. How do you feel about being blackmailed? More important, what do you THINK about being blackmailed?

I doubt that anyone here (FR) wants a war. Some here, or near relatives or close friends, have been IN that form of hell. But, there are things that are worse, like bigger wars, later.

One last thought, one that applies here, but perhaps it pops up because it's been in my own mind a lot recently, tho' not because of FR debates. It's from Babylon 5:

"...sometimes the test is not to find the answer. It's to see how you react when you realize there is no answer."

Ponder these things deeply over the weekend, do some research, and then see what you think... God Bless.

ARE THEY NUTS?!?!?!!?

Do they hate America that much that they are willing to take a chance with a MADMAN who could find a reason one day to consider China or Russia an enemy.

This guy doesn’t live in the real world. I think he REALLY believes his military might is now close to that of the US, as one army spokesperson over there said.

At least Saddam knew he was ####ed.

This guy doesn’t. That’s what makes him scary
